Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice

I’ve been searching for  a good claypot chicken rice near Kepong area for the longest time and this seem like a mission impossible because I can hardly find any recommendation for this online >.<

And there was one day my craving for claypot chicken rice really strike me so without thinking about the horrible traffic on a Saturday afternoon I dragged hubby & Sam went to Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice at Pudu which received many good reviews by bloggers.

Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice tucked just under the highway at Jalan Yew, Pudu and has been established since the 90’ by Madam Heun May Lan. Started with just a small hawker stall at PJ Old Town’s  wet market, she slowly build her way up and now she is a established restaurant operator near Pudu’s  wet market.

Rows of traditional charcoal stoves with very active embers and flame action lined up in front of the restaurant. These really impressed me and brought nostalgic feeling of me helping out to light a charcoal fire for mom when she need to boil soup over this charcoal stove. The soup always taste better if cook by using this method, don’t you agree?

Secret of perfect claypot chicken rice! Hot glowing charcoal not only under the claypot but ON the lid too!

Bags of charcoal placed in front of the shop.

Simple wooden tables & chairs setting

Claypot Chicken Rice

Consisted of marinated chicken and Chinese sausage (lap cheong).

The salted fish was served separately.

Add in the salted fish, mix and stir the rice. The whiff of the rice wine they add in at the end of the cooking process and the smell of the soy sauce marinade had attacked my tastebud, I can’t wait to digging in!

The rice was cook to perfection, every morsel coated evenly with the soy sauce with hints of rice wine and the aromatic salted fish. For those who like crusty bits at the bottom of the claypot there is crunchy layer of “burnt” rice too.

Big chunks of tender chicken meat.
