Ban Khun Mae @ Siam Square, Bangkok
As a lover of spicy and exciting Thai food, where else to get the best of it other than in Thailand?
On the last night of our last year Bangkok’s excursion, we have chosen the highly rated Thai restaurant at the heart of Bangkok. An excellent Thai dinner that put a nice cap to our fabulous family trip. I have to say that we have chosen wisely!

The restaurant exudes a class on its own with the rustic black wooden theme. I like how atmospheric the entire place is, from the Thai inspired timber structures, charming collection of antique ornaments , old photos to the wooden railing in contrasting yellow and green colour. The tunes of traditional Thai music played lively everyday in the restaurant enhanced the overall ambience too.
The menu is a pleasing range of Thai dishes with affordable price tag. Service was attentive and the server can speak rather fluent English, so no problem at all for food ordering 🙂
Old-fashioned Ice Tea (70 Baht) & Lemongrass Juice (60 Baht)
Tom Yum Kung
Simply the quintessential dish of Thai that not to be missed if dining at Thai restaurant. The fiery red Tom Yum was rich in sourness and spiciness while aromatic with a glorious hint of lemongrass and kaffir leaves. The whole bowl was laden generously with fresh prawns which hubby and I enjoyed tremendously.
Steam Seafood Curry Paste Filled in Coconut (170 Baht)
Served in a young coconut husk, the overflowing Thai Otak Otak looks pretty yum at sight. The soft steamed seafood curry paste was delicate in flavor, it had a good balance of spices and creminess, rendering lovely savory and moreish flavours with some heat.
Deep Fried Marinated Chicken Wrapped with Pandanus (150 Baht)
The well marinated chicken was succulent with subtle hint of the pandanus leaves.
Stir Fried Baby Corn with Shrimps (140 Baht)
Verdict: Hubby and I left Ban Khun Mae with almost resonating burps. It proved to be a good choice if you looking for a decent yet affordable Thai meal at Bangkok. The beautiful interior definitely a plus point!

The restaurant looks amazing! It reminds me of this place called Raya in Phuket. Same decor, it was the most popular restaurant there.
The old school telephones look nice. My maternal grandma had one exactly like that too, which we would play with as a kid (was 7 or so then, 30 years back) and the telephone was considered old already then too. Haha. We still had the rotary dial in the 80’s but the box is smaller dy.
Your iced tea looks a little like mango juice to me at first, then I realized it’s coz of the milk. I also like the steamed seafood inside the whole coconut. That and the pandan chicken is something I’ll definitely order too. The prices seem quite okay too, for an air-conditioned comfort and nice ambience.
I’ve been to Phuket but I have zero memory on what I’ve eaten there >_< The otak-otak was good, I like the creamy fish paste in robust flavors.
Wah liu kou shui le la!! :p
I am not a big fan of Thai food, but I can always try Thai food~ Love the pandan chicken especially.
Thai food always can make people drooling eh, hehe 😛
No wonder the name looks familiar! Yes, their food was good, though not as cheap as compared to some new establishments
U have been here before? The pricing, it’s quite reasonable for me considering the comfortable environment and portion.
哦我很喜欢泰国餐,看到流口水!!!!我明天就去曼谷了!期待期待哈哈哈xDDD
看到了,看到了~~ 真羡慕,刚po完香港现在又可以开始曼谷文了 ^__^
That bowl of tom yum is chock-full of ingredients…yum, yum! 😉
I’m craving for it now looking at my photo LOL
the tom yam looks scorching! i can only eat moderately spicy food, so i might not be able to handle it, heheh 😀
I don’t have high tolerance for spicy food too, this Tom Yum was just nice, not too spicy with adequate kick.
