DRAGON-i Peking Duck @ 1 Utama Shopping Mall

My youngest sister wanted to have Peking Duck for our recent family gathering and this place immediately flashed into my mind because I’ve read quite a few online reviews of this place some time ago.

We arrived the rebranded DRAGON-i Peking Duck at 1 Utama Shopping Mall punctually on our reservation time and being usher to our table located at the furthest part of the restaurant. It’s not surprise that the place was brimming with a robust dinner crowd on weekend as the restaurant has been built up a stellar reputation for its exquisite Chinese cuisine, especially Shanghainese dishes such as their signature Xiao Long Bao and La Mien.

Peking Duck 3 Course (RM158.00)

We were here for the Peking Duck so we got our self thee Peking Duck 3 Courses which consisted of a Peking Duck  + Duck Bone Soup with Soft Beancurd + 1 Duck Dish from the choices of Deep-fried Duck’s Bone with Salt and Pepper or Stir-fried Duck’s Bone in Hunan Style or Braised Rice Noodle with Black Truffle and Shredded Duck Meat or Stir-fried Shredded Duck Meat with Vegetarian Shark’s Fin.

There is option of Half Peking Duck + Duck Bone Soup with Soft Beancurd priced at RM105.00/2 course meal.

The beautifully lacquered Peking Duck skin was meticulously carved for us at the table. The experienced chef steadily cuts at an angle, working his way around the bird.

The duck skin was served with spring onions, honey melon, cucumber and house-made sauce and steamed homemade pancakes. Place all those condiments and duck skin (or even duck meat) on the pancake, roll it up and pop the whole thing in your mouth and let the flavours do its magic.

This was the portion of meat craved from the duck, together with two drumsticks. Judging from the size of the duck, we really thought that the portion should be more that this. What do you think? ◔_◔

The flavour of the roasted duck was sublime nonetheless, succulent and the marination was delicate, allowing the natural gamey sweetness of the bird to shine through.

Duck Bone Soup with Soft Bean Curd

Long simmering of the roasted duck bones rendering the milky rich broth, with other ingredients of pickled mustard and bean curd, the soup was comforting and brought warmness to the tummy and soul.

Deep Fried Duck Bones with Salt & Pepper

We opted to have the duck bones prepared with salt and pepper style. The duck bones with meat attached (not much though) were moreish with generous amount of aromatic fried garlic bits,  great as beer snack, I would say. (^∀^)

Sauteed Diced Chicken with Dried Flower Chilli in Szechuan Style (RM38.00)

A bit underwhelming as the amount of chilies was much more than the chicken pieces.   (︶︹︺)

Braised Iberico Pork (RM58.00)

One of the seasonal dishes that available during our visit which was nothing to shout about. The flavour was not as pronounced as I expected, and lacking a little in that hearty factor. Meat texture wise, could have been better if braised a bit longer time.

Sauteed Diced Chicken with Walnuts in Soy Sauce (RM30.00)

Can really recall the taste of this dish, or did I eat this? We got this for the kids actually. 😛

Sauteed Egg White with Fish and Dried Scallops (RM25.00)

赛螃蟹, translated as a dish that can compete with crab, but initially no crab meat is used in this dish. It’s is a very traditional Chinese dish cooked with fish and plenty of egg white. The flavour was light and showcased the velvety smooth egg white and fish.

Stir Fried String Beans with Minced Pork (RM25.00)

Decent but not outstanding vegetable dish.

Verdict: Overall, our Peking Duck course meal was rather satisfying but the portion of the food was a bit small and less compatible to the price. With total damage of RM500.00, (we also had white rice (RM3.00/pax), Oolong Tea (RM6.00/pax) and titbit (RM2.00×3), we certainly hoping a more satisfying meal.
