Famous Hot Pot & BBQ @ Lt. Bourke Street, Melbourne
Nothing beats having a hot pot meal filled with a treasure trove of goodies cooking in the aromatic broth on chilly nights. The 10°C weather at Melbourne called for a steamboat dinner to comfort both our tummies and souls. My sis recommended Famous Hot Pot & BBQ located in Chinatown which she tried during her previous trip.
Occupied two floors of one of the shoplot along Lt. Bourke Street, we arrived on time for our reservation and were ushered to the upper floor of the restaurant. The long narrow space was full of wooden tone, from the wooden flooring, exposed brick walls to the browish tone booth seats. Small potted plants, tin metal bottle caps sign poster plaques and the beautiful vintage style wall lamps decorated the place.
As its name implies, Famous Hot Pot & BBQ serves Hong Kong style steamboat featuring wide variety of soup bases and dipping sauces. The menu offers an ample range of seafood, meat, offal, vegetables, patties and noodles to fill up any hungry diner. Some highlights included Premium Wagyu (AU$49.80/160g), Ox Trip (AU$8.80), Drunken Chicken (AU$9.00), Fresh Ox Aorta (AU$9.80), Duck Blood (AU$9.80) and Fresh Baby Abalone (AU$48.00). There were also small selection of Dim Sum (Xiao Long Bao & Prawn Dumpling) and snacks (Pig Ear with Cucumber, Fresh Oysters, Spicy Chicken Wings and Braised Pork Intestines, just to name a few).
But we were here for their steamboat buffet, priced at AU$38.80/pax. There were six soup bases to choose from, Clear Soup, Hot & Spicy (Mala), Tom Yum Soup, Mixed Mushrooms Soup, Drunken Chicken Soup and Satay Soup. For 3 persons and above, double flavours can be chosen and three soup bases for 5 persons and above.
The buffet counter was well stocked with assorted meat balls, vegetables, mushrooms, seafood and noodle.
Self-serve condiments are also available so you can make your own dipping sauces.
We had Hot & Spicy soup (Mala), Drunken Chicken Soup and Mixed Mushrooms Soup. The soup bases were adequatey flavourful.
Meat selection comprised sliced beef, marinated beef, sliced lamb, sliced pork, Ox tripe, pork kidney, pork liver, drunken chicken, chicken liver, sausages, spam ham and duck blood. Unfortunately, sliced pork was not available on that day. I couldn’t say the meat were top premium grade, but they were fresh and we specially love the well marbled sliced beef.

Soft seved to end the dinner and there were fruits and red bean dessert too. Burpssss….
♥Verdict: We had multiple orders of those good quality sliced meat and well as prawns, prawn paste and mussels from the buffet counter, pretty justified what we had paid. Our major grouch that day probably the absent of the sliced pork, which rather disappointed the pork lover in our group. 😛

The steamboat buffet has really big variety to please anyone. The prices scares me a bit.
I like the shots of the Chinatown which looks cleaner than the San Francisco Chinatown.

Sean, there are a lot of Asian in Melbourne, especially the area I stayed during my trip, which I thought I’m somewhere in China because 8 out of 10 people I met were Chinese/Asian 😛
