Festive Dulang Set @ Tamarind Hill Kuala Lumpur

Thanks to the exclusive invitation from Tamarind Hill, I had a sneak preview of their Festive Dulang Set which features local and regional flavours for a unique celebration on this holy month of fasting.

Being my first visit to Tamarind Hill, it’s certainly a surreal experience where the trees, lush greenery and clever usage of water ponds could transform a restaurant located a few metres away from the busy Jalan Sultan Ismail into a tranquil and peaceful setting. Being there myself, I understood now why Tamarind Hills could be nominated for Malaysia’s Tourism Award in 2018 and also be listed in Malaysia’s Tatler’s Best Restaurant Guide in 2017. The rustic ambiance coupled with fine Thai-Burmese cuisine is also one of the main reason many patrons have chosen it to celebrate memorable occasions, be it birthday, family gathering and etc.

A short walk on this bamboo-lined stairway with lanterns over your head winds up to the entrance of Tamarind Hill restaurant.

The setting of Tamarind Hill is brimming with character and gracefully evokes an Indochinese charm echoed throughout the restaurant. Simple square tables with pristine white table cloth arranged neatly within space which is brilliant sectioned into two dining areas. Collections of Buddha statues, framed artworks, sturdy rustic wooden furniture reflected the Thai-Burmese influence on the interior design.

The outdoor dining is equally alluring with lovely accompaniment of pond, water features and lush greenery.

Tamarind Hill’s Festive Dulang Set

Priced at RM220.00 ++ per couple and available from 13th May to 4th June 2019.

The set is specially crafted by Executive Chef Phiyun Thongyun from Northen part of Thailand and her team, featuring Deep-Fried Spring Roll with Glass Noodle & Mushroom, Winged Beans and Minced Chicken with Tom Yum Paste, Grilled Honey Chicken Drumstick, Grilled Seabass Wrapped in Tumeric Leaf served with ‘Sambal Kicap’, Beef Massamam Curry, Squid with Sambal Petai and Stir Fried Kailan with Salted Fish, served with steamed Jasmine Rice. The ‘Dulang’ set also comes with dates and fruit platter as well as drinks with choices of Tamarind, Lemongrass or Sirap Bandung.

Deep-Fried Spring Roll with Glass Noodle & Mushroom

The appetizer of deep fried spring rolls was generously filled with lightly seasoned glass noodles and mushroom, have it with the accompanied chili dipping for a more satisfying flavour.

Winged Beans and Minced Chicken with Tom Yum Paste

Our salad course was a beautiful concoction of thinly sliced winged beans, minced chicken and shallots tossed in appetizing sour and spicy Tom Yum dressing. Oh boy, I really love the multitude of textures of this dish as well as robust flavours of the Tom Yum. It wasn’t too spicy, but had a more tangy, sweetish quality to it.

Grilled Honey Chicken Drumstick

The chicken drumsticks were nicely grilled, tender with a solid chargrilled smoky note laced with mellow of sweetness. The spicy dipping definitely deserves special mention for its evocative fiery punch and acidity that immediately took the dish to another level of enjoyment.

Squid with Sambal Petai

One taste of this Squid with Sambal Petai and I was literally raving over it that evening. Chef Phiyun Thongyun did a mean rendition of Sambal Petai and instead of the usual prawn version, this cooked with squid was perfectly executed as well. As a Petai lover, I was glad to see the generous amount of stinky beans in the dish. (ノ゚▽゚)ノ Don’t say I didn’t warn you, the spiciness definitely enough to set your mouth on fire but it was also beautifully nuanced it’s addictive. I found myself scooping the Sambal gravy non-stop to my plate of rice, here gone my diet. ╥﹏╥

Beef Massamam Curry

The Beef Massamam Curry on the other hand was comfortably mild in spiciness, nicely creamy with a heady balance of spices and herbs. The tender beef and sweet potato chunks (yes, sweet potato!) were well absorbed the flavours of the luscious gravy. It’s another dish that went really well with rice.

Grilled Seabass Wrapped in Tumeric Leaf served with ‘Sambal Kicap’

The seabass fillets were soft and the minimal seasoning allowed the natural sweetness of the fish took the center stage of the overall flavour. Punch up the taste with the served along Sambal Kicap, if you prefer stronger taste.

Stir Fried Kailan with Salted Fish

Simple stir fried vegetable amped up with the addition of savory salted fish.

Fruit Platter

Refreshing fruit platter to cap off the enjoyable dinner.

Verdict: Portion wise, the Festive Dulang Set is more than sufficient for two persons. The food shouted quality and wholesomeness which was memorably wonderful. The astonishing environment and ambiance come as a package to complete the overall dining experience.
