Gurney Delight @ Kota Kemuning
I was brought to Gurney Delight by a friend from Penang and she told me this place serves pretty good Penang hawker food.
The setting of the restaurant is simple and the space is brightly lit and airy. We was there on a Sunday afternoon and it was packed to the brim.
ABC (RM5.90)
A colourful icy hill generously topped with several ingredients such as corn, red beans, jellies, “attap chee”, grass jelly, candied nutmeg, peanuts and a scoop of ice cream. This was just average ok for me as it lacked of the fragrance of Gula Melaka.
Penang Chee Cheong Fun (RM4.00)
Penang style Chee Cheong Fun served with shrimp paste sauce definitely not as common as the sweet sauce Chee Cheong Fun we usually have. The smooth slippery rice sheets well complemented with the distinctive pungent flavor of the shrimp paste. The combination is simple but successfully triggers the craving addiction I have.
Duck Egg Char Koay Teow (RM8.00)
Gurney Delight’s version of this iconic Penang street food was decent. The flat noodles came with pleasant eggy and smoky aroma, laden with Chinese sausage (Lap Cheong), medium size prawns, cockles, bean sprouts and chives. I like it not too oily and the robust soy sauce flavors.
Penang Char Hor Fun (RM8.50)
This dish to me is an incarnation of our local ‘Wat Tan Hor’ (Flat Rice Noodles in Egg Gravy) without using egg in the gravy. The flavors were just run-of-the-mill for me but the generous portion of pork slices, pork liver, prawns and fish meat has made up for the lackluster flavors.
Penang Hokkien Char (RM6.90)
A totally stranger to me, this Penang Hokkien Char is very much different with our local Hokkien Mee. The yellow noodles and vermicelli are drenched in watery gravy, taste wise, it has a palatable flavors which I believe contributed by the seafood and meat. My friend told me that Penang Hokkien Char must be eaten with the sambal which is the soul of the dish that elevated the overall flavor. To be honest, I still prefer our black black Hokkien Mee. ^__^
Duck Meat Kuey Teow Th’ng (RM 6.90)
Smooth rice noodles served in clear soup with duck meat slices, fish balls, fish cake and gizzard. Flavors was light and certainly a comfort food for both adult and children.
Verdict: Recommended by a Penangite foodie, I believe the authenticity of the food is there. This place definitely not bad to assuage one’s yearning for Penang street food.

Most dishes look legit except… Chee Cheong Fun.
CCF, why? What is missing?
Kota Kemunig seems like a place you can get lots of Penang delights. I am looking for asam laksa!
Oh really? Kota Kemuning is totally stranger to me, too far from where I stay.
Wow!!! I must drive all the way to Kota Kemuning even if I have to cross many mountains and battle with demons. I saw that Hokkien Char and my eyes went wide. I really hope all their tastes are as good as they looked. I am Penang Kia coming now!!…. Woo Hoo!
Don’t worry TM, you no need to cross many mountains and battle with demons to reach Kota Kemuning, haha, u so “kua jiong” LOL
That Hokkien Char, my 1st time had it, to be honest it’s quite bland to me, I like stronger tasted food 😛
Char kuey teow for me! But less lap cheong, more cockles! 😀
OK, char kuao teow 2 plate, my cockles give you, your lap cheong give me, win win!
Been wanting to go there for a while, sooooonn!
I think this place near where you stay right? Fast fast go 🙂
I am eyeing the ice kacang and CKT! If the food gets the seal of approval from your Penang friend, then it must be good lah.
She said she like the Hokkien Char at this place 😛
Very far leh to travel to get Penang delights….but, of course, still nearer than Penang-lah….kekeke! ;D
Ya, same here, very far for me to travel from Kepong to Kota Kemuning ~>_<~
Is it halal?
We had the curry mee today and nutmeg drink. Curry mee is still OK but the nutmeg is tasteless (only taste like sugar). I saw others ordered the Pg Char Ho Fan (which I was tempted to order at the beginning) but it doesn’t look good and the customer who ordered the dish didn’t look happy about it too, so I dropped my idea and ordered curry mee instead. For me, this is the cafe where you can’t get fish but prawns also OK place… Lol
Coco, my experience was a just okay too, lack of the wow factor.
