Mimi's Dining Room

Made’s Warung @ Bali

While waiting for our room to be ready, we asked the hotel staff for recommendations on restaurant to settle our late lunch. Among the few options given I saw a familiar restaurant name – Made’s Warung, which is located approximately 10 minutes walk from our hotel.

Established in 1969, Made’s Warung (pronounced Mah-deh’s) started as a roadside food stall catering to the villagers in Kuta, which was still a sleepy fishing village in the sixties. It has developed from a traditional roadside warung into a reputed restaurant serving wide variety of local and international food in Bali.

It was a pleasant 10 minutes walk from our hotel to Made’s Warung, Seminyak with plenty to see along the journey, such as small local shops, residential houses, small alleys as well as Pura (Balinese Hindu temple). We were greeted by this beautiful Balinese gate at the entrance and delighted to see  that the restaurant is set amidst the lush greenery.

Made’s Warung at Seminyak occupies a huge space with both outdoor and semi-indoor seating. The restaurant is boasted in rustic wooden setting and furnishing and heavily decorated with Balinese stone statues which meant to convey the rich Balinese cultural charm. The semi-indoor is equally happening with framed photographs of historic pictures, food snaps, ancient Balinese cultural memoirs and more.

There are Balinese dance performances as well as some live music everyday to entertain the diners.

It’s a lovely place to explore with lush greenery and interesting Balinese statues placed here and there.

There is even a bar area set  in the middle to host diners and their pints to unwind for the day.

Not only the restaurant, there are a spa and shops such as gelato, fashion and accessories boutique, art and craft and jewelry. I’m so surprise to know that they have two accommodation options under their group too! (Check out HERE

Their large menu offers a mishmash of local Balinese, Western, Thai and Japanese cuisine. Expect to find Caesar Salad, Vietnamese rolls, Beef Carpacio, tomato soup, Miso soup, Bakso, butter toast, curries, steak, pastas, pizzas, sandwiches, grilled seafood, sweet and sour fish, tempura, sushi rolls, Tom Yum, assorted cakes, pancakes, pudding and gelatos in the menu, you’ll never run out of options when you dine in here. 😛

Avocado Juice (IDR 32k), Go Fit (IDR 50k) & Red Dragon (IDR 60k)

Nasi Campur Babi Guling (IDR 105k)

Babi guling, or roasted suckling pig, is one of Bali’s most famed dishes. Since we didn’t plan to visit any Babi Guling restaurant on this trip so hubby opted for this rice platter which comprised Babi Guling and other side dishes to proved that he had tried the dish. LOL

The components of Babi Guling, Sayur Urab (steamed vegetables mixed with seasoned and spiced grated coconut dressing), long beans, sate lilit and braised pork belly were lackluster and easily forgettable.

Nasi Goreng Made (IDR 60k)

My fried rice was rather good though, fluffy with well flavoured grains and studded with diced chicken and tiny prawns. The rockstar for me would have to be the accompanied sambal. It packed a nice fiery punch and the spiciness really made me craved for more.

Spaghetti Meat Sauce (IDR 85k)

Ok, Sam’s usual order, nothing to shout about. =.=”

Before leaving Bali, we paid a revisit their outlet at Ngurah Rai International Airport for lunch.

Nasi Campur Special ala Made (IDR 113,742)

The rice platter came with a melange of assorted vegetable and meat dishes included brinjal, corn, beef rendang, spicy shredded chicken, lemongrass chicken, Tempeh, jackfruit salad (Lawar Nangka), cucumber salad (cerancam) Tuna fish, stir fried Amaranthus, bean curd rendang, Sate Lilit and sambal.

Nothing really impressive but nothing to complaint as well, it’s good option if you want to have a taste of variety of local Balinese dishes.

Nasi Bebek Betutu (IDR 67,402)

Betutu is a another classic Balinese dish of steamed and roasted chicken or duck in rich bumbu betutu (betutu spice mix). My chicken betutu was tender and speckled generously with gravy. Despite the copious amount of spices used in the mixture, the flavour was not too overpowering with hint of sweetness.

After having a few chicken dishes in Bali, one conclusion that I can make is most of the chicken (or poultry) skin was not thoroughly cleaned with the feather calamus (think quill which used as pen) still attached. >_<

Remark: Price stated not included 10% + 5% (Seminyak outlet)  tax & 7.9 % + 10% tax (Ngurah Rai outlet).

Verdict: I wouldn’t say they food we tried at Made’s Warung were fantastic, but the large menu definitely a plus point which has very diverse food choices. It still a place worth to check out as you can try most of the Balinese dishes under one roof with reasonable price range.
