Do I qualify as steamboat lover if I had steamboat dinner for at least once a month or sometimes up to 2 to 3 times a month?

I believe I am a steamboat lover but my steamboat dinners are mostly the non-halal type located at shop lots. It never crossed my mind to dine at halal steamboat joint. That was until I tried a really good halal steamboat recently. 

It was about dinner time after we had done our usual weekend grocery shopping at Paradigm Mall a couple of weeks ago. We planned to drive back to Kepong and had our favourite steamboat but it started to rain when we about to collect our car so decided to have our dinner in the mall. Loitering in the mall and we stumbled upon October Steamboat, since the craving hit, so we just went in without thinking twice.

The interior of the restaurant is simple in natural earthy tone and not decorated with a huge deal of flair. I like the spaciousness and the brightly lit dining area, as well as the comfortable and pleasant seating.

Chicken Soup (FOC) & Asam Laksa (RM6.13)

We also invited friends to join our dinner and we got ourselves two big sharing pots with different soup base –  chicken soup for the little ones and the Asam Laksa which I never try before for steamboat. Individual pot is available too. The Asam Laksa broth was decent and pronounced as it should be with good doses of sourness and spiciness, but there is no fish meat in the soup like your usual Asam Laksa noodles. Other soup base options are Nyonya Tom Yum (RM5.08), Signature White Tom Yum (FOC) and Herbal Soup (RM4.05).

October Steamboat offers both set and ala carte order for the steamboat ingredients. Our platter came with prawns, fish slices, meat balls, dumplings, bean curd sheets, noodles, eggs and assorted of vegetables and mushrooms.

Both bean curd sheets were goods, fresh and fish paste filling was well seasoned. 


Homemade Otak-otak Paste(RM14.42)

Mild in both spiciness and Otak-otak flavour, but I like the firm yet bouncy texture.


Cheese Fish Ball (RM7.16) & Seafood Taufu (RM6.13)

The cheese fish balls are the crowd pleaser with its generous oozing cheese once you bite into it. 


Siew Bak Choy (RM4.05), Choy Sum (RM5.08) & Beeh Mushroom (RM6.13)

Mama said eat more vegetables, hehe 😛



Customize your dipping sauce with the different sauces and condiments provided.


If the steamboat can’t satisfy your hunger (like us LOL), there are more to offer in their menu such as fried snacks of fried fish cakes, salt and pepper squid or stir fried aka Dai Chow dishes include Fried Hokkien Mee, Fried Rice, Marmite Chicken, Sweet and Sour Crab, Salted Egg Prawns, Kam Heong Clams, and etc.

Lusciously crusted with a sandy salted egg yolk coating, we definitely enjoyed our finger licking good moment indulging the crustaceans. Although the crab not the most meaty I’ve eaten but the freshness is guaranteed, check out the next photo.

Kam Heong Clams (RM20.65)

The Kam Heong Clams was up to standard, sufficiently bold in flavors and redolent with spices. It’s compulsory to lick the sauce clean from the clam shell, I tell ya. ^__^

I always have soft spot for fried stuffs, both were arrived pipping hot and nicely cooked.


Hokkien Meen (RM14.42)

How does a Halal version of Hokkien Mee taste? Brilliantly add in salted fish to amp up the flavors, although not as aromatic as the non-Halal version with the essential pork lard aroma, but good enough to let our Muslim friends to have a taste of the Hokkien Mee.


Verdict: Overall an enjoyable steamboat meal at a comfortable air-conditioned dining environment. Price wise, very wallet friendly for a restaurant in shopping mall. Recommended steamboat ingredients and dishes – Seafood Fuchuk, Fish & Soya, Cheese Fish Balls, Fried Chicken Wings, Kam Heong Clams and Salted Egg Yolk Crabs.
