Ong Cheng Huat Seafood 王清发海鲜 @ Butterworth, Penang
Our train ride from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth was a delightful experience and after we picked up our rented car, we directly headed over to our lunch venue – Ong Cheng Huat Seafood 王清发海鲜. Its location is rather secluded inside a residential area (hidden from the main road) but there is a signboard at the junction to show you where to turn in.
The restaurant is huge and airy with many tables placed neatly within the dining area. Photos of their signature dishes on the wall make the ordering easier. They do sell some snacks and biscuits at the cashier counter as well.
A brief research on the internet, we got ourselves a few of their must try items which I can see almost every table ordered the same dishes. Our food came unbelievably fast, in less than 5 minutes but a few dishes were in lukewarm when served to our table. 🙁
Prawn Cracker (RM7.00/pcs)
Tiny prawn pieces sandwiched between the thin popiah skin then deep fried to a crispy finish. Ours was a bit oily and it didn’t look or taste like freshly fried, definitely did not live up to our expectation.
Poached Octopus (RM16.00)
The size of these octopus was bigger than what we had at Ipoh Tuck Kee but this did not earn extra point for the dish because some were undercooked and the freshness certainly not on the top notch level.
Fried Bee Hoon (RM7.00)
The fried mee hoon unquestionably the star of this meal. Meticulously cooked to the perfect texture and backed by a lovely ‘wok hei’ aroma with scrumptious eggy flavour. The vermicelli cooked with generous amount of ingredients included eggs, shrimps, bean sprouts and choy sum.
Deep Fried Spring Chicken (RM6.50/bird)
Well marinated and deep fried to perfection in a beautiful golden brown. Crispy skin with juicy meat and the flavours was spot on, we enjoyed the finger-licking good moment.
Verdict: Revisit? Most probably yes if I happen to be at Butterworth again. I highly recommend the Deep Fried Spring Chicken and Fried Mee Hoon. I also read a lot good comment regarding their steamed Red Snapper, try it out if you have plan to dine in here.
