Oriental Star @ EkoCheras Mall

Oriental Star nestled in EkoCheras Mall is one of the recent additions to Oriental Group’s of eateries. The Oriental Group of Restaurants is renowned for fine Chinese cuisines served in their various restaurants in Klang Valley.

Opened just one month ago, Oriental Star is the restaurant with the largest banquet hall with 95 tables capacity in Cheras vicinity and I was truly impressed by it spaciousness during my recent visit. The place is elegantly designed with high ceiling, tables with pristine tablecloth and draped chairs and fully carpeted flooring.

Apart from serving as banquet hall, Oriental Star also offers Dim Sum and set lunches. I was here two weeks ago to try out this Special Gourmet Set with my foodie friends, priced at RM 798 per table of 10 pax, the multiple course menu definitely worth the money.

Teochew Style Platter

The set was commenced with this astoundingly presented Teochew Style Platter in 3-tier stand with flowing dry ice fog. It comprised of Sea Clams with Wasabi Sesame Sauce, Stewed Pork Neck, Intestines & Beancurd, Fragrant Garlic Fish Fillet and Crispy Crab Meat Dumplings.

Sea Clams with Wasabi Sesame Sauce

The appetizing nutty sesame dressing nicely complement the sea clams, jelly fish and okra pieces. The addition of wasabi in the sauce provided an uplifting nose-tingling sensation to the flavor.

Stewed Pork Neck, Intestines & Beancurd

A classic Teochew stew dishes with intensely flavourful soy gravy made from soy sauce and variety of aromatic spices. The pork neck, intestines and bean curd were braised till tender and well absorbed the flavours from the gravy. I wish I can have a bowl of rice to go with this. 😛

Fragrant Garlic Fish Fillet

Tender and flaky fish fillets coated with thin crunchy batter, perfumed with fried garlic and curry leaves. This was a sure crowd-pleaser for everyone of all ages.

Crispy Crab Meat Dumplings

Equally popular was this crab meat dumpling packed with tasty meat filling.

Braised Shark’s Fin with Crab Roe

Steamed Ocean Dragon Garoupa with Fresh Abalone, Seng Kwa (luffa) & Squid Balls Taishan Style

Filled with a whole Ocean Dragon Garoupa sit atop of Luffa and glass noodles soaking in a pool of superior soy sauce and fermented black beans concoction broth together with fresh abalone and squid balls.

The highly-prized Ocean Garoupa with firm meaty flesh was delectably sweet and sublime. I also like the bouncy squid balls as well as the beautifully cooked fresh abalone finished with lots of minced garlic. The lightly chewy glass noodles and Luffa gourd pieces have soaked up all the umami flavours of the sauce.

Roast Suckling Pig with Preserved Bean Curd

The most anticipated dish and it did live up to my expectation. The skin is beautifully and evenly lacquered and the crunchiness was spot on. However I couldn’t taste the preserved bean curd as per name suggested.

Stir-fried Asparagus Beans with Olive and Soy Beans

It’s my first time eating asparagus beans and I like it! The texture is similar with French beans but slightly crunchier. The Chinese preserved olive and black beans provided a good dose of saltiness to the vegetables and the flavour was further amped up with chili bits.

Steamed Rice with Waxed Meat & Yam Shunde Style

Served in a huge earthware, the steamed rice was generously studded with waxed sausages, waxed meat, yam cubes and lotus seeds, completed with stir fried French beans and aromatic crispy bits.

Three Angels

The dessert was a treat for both eyes and mouth. It was beautifully presented on a “silver tree” with 3 types of dainty desserts of osmanthus jelly balls, lemon jelly balls, and steamed sponge cakes with desiccated coconut.

The Gourmet Set is available for dine-in only until 31 December 2018.

Verdict: This is definitely a rock-bottom deal considering that there are premium dishes such as abalone, Ocean Garoupa and roasted suckling pig are in the menu. As far as the food was concerned, they were all nicely executed.
