Original Cake 源味本铺@ Sunway Pyramid

As I’ve mentioned in my Village Park Nasi Lemak post earlier, I have no patient to queue for food nowadays, especially when I heard that the waiting time can up to 1 hour or longer.

I’m an irresponsible food blogger (=.=”) which never intended to try the famous old-fashion egg sponge cake from Original Cake 源味本铺 although its queue was all over the social media. There are mix reviews about their cakes. Of course the craze can pretty justify the quality/flavor of their sponge cakes but there are also comments said that their signature original flavor sponge cake is overrated and tastes like a normal egg-based sponge cake that can be easily get from night market or bakery.

Originated from Tamshui, Taiwan (台湾淡水) and established in 2011, Original Cake 源味本铺 has total of 4 branches at Taipei and 5 branches in Malaysia. When they first opened at Sunway Velocity early this year, queue was perpetually formed but I’m not sure if the dust has settled now. Why I say so? Because I was at Sunway Pyramid last Sunday and there were only 5 or 6 persons in the queue so for the sake of trying this famous cake, we joined them.

A big tray of cake freshly from the oven and evenly being sliced into smaller blocks then packed into boxes.

Tata, we got our Original Cake within 5 minutes!  ✌️

Original Flavor (promotional price:RM15.00, original price RM18.00)

Nicely packed in a paper box lined with baking paper, the cake was in whole without cut into small pieces but a plastic knife is provided. The cake is recommended to be kept maximum 3 days in refrigerator.

A classic, “Gai Dan Gou” (egg sponge cake) uses the essential ingredients of flour, milk, egg and sugar. Taste wise, mild in sweetness, the egg-y flavour was really subtle as well as the milky taste, not very noticeable. The texture on the other hand was spot on. Airy, soft and fluffy, resemble our normal sponge cake but with a thicker crust.

Verdict: The cake is undeniable rather good in terms of texture and flavor however if you ask me is it worth the 1-2 hours queue? My answer is a “No”. Overall, I would say it’s worth trying at least once, solely for the sake of “TRYING”, provided that you do not need to queue for it just like me 😛
