Product Review: Red Chef Spicy Sakura Prawn Soup Noodles

Grabbed the No.2 spot in The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodles 2018, this Red Chef’s Spicy Sakura Prawn Soup Noodles is one of the Malaysian brands in the list. MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle, CarJEN Nyonya Curry Laksa and Red Chef Green Tom Yum Soup Noodles were ranked at No.3, No.4 and No.6 respectively.

 

One packet with four packs of noodles, each pack came with the curly noodles block, chilli paste, seasoning powder and fried shallots.

 

I also got this elevated version with rice vermicelli and yellow noodles block which is the first instant noodles that has this combination of noodles. Other condiments are remained unchanged. This version is in an individual packaging and the combination of rice vermicelli and yellow noodles is predominant for the authentic Penang Har Mee/Penang Hokkien Mee. 

 

My verdict: The soup had an appealing orangey hue with trace of prawn oil and it was delicious. The broth was laced with a distinctive sweet crustacean flavour with average spiciness. From the ingredients list, I know that the chili paste is made from three types of prawns and Sakura Prawns being one of the types. To achieve the best result, please follow the cooking instruction on the package, especially the amount of water for the soup.

On the other hand, the texture of the noodles missed the mark. The non-fried turmeric noodles and rice vermicelli which is made from 100% rice of Thailand were easily broken into shorter strands after cooking which slightly affected the overall experience. That sachet of crunchy fried shallots is another crucial component that plays an important role for a good bowl of Penang Har Mee.

Actually I just came back from Penang and after trying a few bowls of local Penang Har Mee, I wouldn’t say this Red Chef Spicy Sakura Prawn Soup Noodles can completely replace them but definitely an ideal option for instant version, especially when the craving attack during ungodly hours.

  • As I mentioned in KY’s blog, I got these in early 2019, not to review but as a gesture of thanks when I wrote a blogpost about their prawn noodles. They first sent me all four flavours (including the prawn noodles) and sent me their mee + meehoon version later (when it came out in mid-2019). I do agree that their prawn noodles are pretty good for an instant version. The white curry was ok-lah but the other two I didn’t like as much.

  • Penang food is always good due to their water from the hills. If the water comes from Kuala Muda, it would be another story.
