Pulau Ketam Trip

Pulau Ketam,  literally translated as “Crab Island” which is a small island located off the coast of Port Klang, Selangor. The island is easily accessible from the Port Klang jetty by ferry. Hubby and I (Sam too of course) visited Pulau Ketam for the first time a few months ago for a half day trip.

We drove to Port Klang (or alternatively by KTM commuter train) and bought the ferry tickets from a small counter near the car park entrance.

Check out the price, return ticket for adult: RM 14.00 & Child: RM 8.00. Beside ferry, speedboat is also available 24 hours per day on call

This is the air-conditioned ferry that we took and the journey took about 30 – 40 minutes.

What can you do in Pulau Ketam? If you’re on a day trip, walk around the village or rent a bicycle and explore the island whizzing past villagers’ houses :P. Have a seafood meal, snacking on fried ice-cream and assorted shaved ice dessert and shopping on local products such as dried seafood and variety of fish and prawn crackers.

The houses on the island are built on wooden stilts 1 to 10 metres above sea level.The main thoroughfares are narrow concreted pavements.

 

There is no car on the island and electric motorcycle as photo above or bicycle are the main transportation.

I adored how the houses painted in vibrant colours.

 

Shopping time! I’ve bought some dried cuttlefish (best snacks when watching TV!) and dried shrimps.

 

For those who want to stay overnight, there are a few choices of budget hotels and homestays.

 

The unpleasant view ~ There is no sewage system on the island so you can smell the sewage that is being discharged into the sea  and be prepared for the stench in the air if you catch the breeze going the wrong direction =.=”

The flavored shaved ice aka “Yoyo Bing” definitely the best thirst quencher in such weather!

 

We had our lunch at one of the seafood restaurant on the island. Once we were seated, the workers from different oyster omelet aka “oh chien” stalls approached us for ordering.

 

There are a few clam and oyster omelet aka “Lala chiean” and “oh chien” stalls operating on the island.

 

“Lala Chien” was a bit dry but filled with abundance of tiny clam meats.

Paired with lots of onions, the deep fried mantis prawns coated with buttery eggy sauce was delicious however the batter of the mantis prawns was too thick, it could have been better with lighter batter.

Verdict: It’s not an impressive island but it’s an easy escape from KL for a day. It’s a good opportunity to expose the kids to how’s a water village looks like and support local folks. Cuti-cuti Malaysia!
