Restoran Ruby @ Pudu
Truly confident people always have the upper hand.
Well, what about a truly confident eatery that put up a statement like the below:
“If you are not satisfied, we don’t expect you to pay” (不好吃不收钱) ?
I guess the food is really that good or is it just a marketing gimmick? Let’s find out.
The eatery that I refer to is this Restoran Ruby located at Puda which is famous for its Tong Sui desserts, sesame, peanut and almond paste to be exact. I always wanted to visit place and the opportunity came during our staycation at E&O Residences Kuala Lumpur. We came here for dessert after our dinner at Keong Kee Herbal Soup.
As you can see in on photo above, the shop was packed to the brim and there was a queue waiting for ordering (for both dine in and take away).
More tables on the alley and road side.
The indoor seating are quite limited and the interior was a little cramped – an eclectic mix of knick knack, equipment, fake cherry blossom tree, lion heads, framed photos and drapery plants all placed and hanging haphazardly within the space.
Their popularity can be judged from the vast media coverage that proudly displayed in the shop.
Restoran Ruby is famous for its black sesame paste Tong Sui which recipe is handed down through 4 generations. Other than Tong Sui, I spotted a few noodles stalls were operating in the restaurant too.
Scooping and packing Tong Sui non stop.
Peanut Paste (RM3.50)
The colour of the peanut paste was paler than the one we used to have. It had a nice thick and creamy consistency with pleasant smoky nutty flavour.
Yin Yong Black Sesame (RM6.00)
I opted to have combination of black sesame and almond paste. Hitting the right notes for flavours and fragrance, the black sesame paste was aromatic and nutty. Almond paste Tong Sui is not commonly available in Malaysia and due to its distinctive smell, it is not as popular as other. The fragrance of this version from Restoran Ruby was rather mild, and I’m glad that both Tong Sui were adequately sweetened.
♥Verdict: Although the choices are quite limited but Restoran Ruby still is a decent place for Tong Sui especially if you’re a fan of Tong Sui in paste form like these.

I like that Yin Yong sesame! So nice. I saw this place several times but ate at the other dessert shop instead. I must try this Ruby.
TM, I want to try the one opposite it instead 😛
nice yin yang pattern! i’d like to see some yin yang patterns for coffee latte art 😀
Sean, maybe you can request for it next time.
Wah that yin yong memang win! I’d wanna try almond paste tho!
KY, I also attracted by the pattern 😛
You must try the Happy Garden Saturday Night famous Tong Shui hawker. Ruby’s version is no match to this guy. Good stuff like this delicious tong shui ~ Everything sold out in less than 1.5 hours each time he opens for business at 4 pm with a long queue.
My favourite – Peanut Paste for RM 2.50 per packet & eat-in RM 2.20 only. His almond paste & sesame paste is also a hit with the locals too.
Aunty Lilly, thank you for your recommendation and will bookmark this place for future visit 🙂
Black Sesame & Creamy Peanut Tong Sui are my favorite. Too bad Seremban don’t have such place 🙁
