Restoran Tuck Kee 德记炒粉店 @ Ipoh

Apparently there 3 Tuck Kee restaurants at Ipoh which specialize in fried noodles. Maybe there are more, any Ipohan can enlighten me?

The first Tuck Kee I tried was this shop located diagonally across from Restoran Nasi Ayam Pak Kong, Jalan Theatre on last year. Recommended by the owner of the famous Tau Foo Fah stall when we had light refreshment there. I didn’t know this is not the ORIGINAL one until I saw someone posted a photo of facade of the original Tuck Kee.

The ORIGINAL Restoran Tuck Kee situated at Jalan Yau Tet Shin. Buzzing with activities and this place is often thronged with people. Waiting is inevitable and getting a table could be difficult no matter peak or non-peak hours as this was the scene when we reached circa 9pm+ after our hot springs session. The crowd kept pouring in the entire time we were there too, so be prepared to stand beside the table to “chope” (reserve/secure) the seats. >_<

Actually there is another shop with a rather misleading name of Sun Tuck Kee on the same street, to be precise it’s just 2 doors away.  But their business was not as brisk as the former.

This long-standing restaurant has been operating for more than 50 years and is known for its dependably good fried noodles dishes. There are very limited seats in the shop but ample of tables are spilling out onto both sides the street.

Their menu is quite limited which features different types fried noodles and appetizers such as Hokkien Fried Noodles, Wat Dan Hor, Braised Yee Mee, Bean Sprout, Braised Chicken Feet, Meat Balls Soup, Baby Octopus in Soy Sauce and etc.

Yut Kong Hor 月光河

Among all the noodles dishes, this Yut Kong Hor is one of the most popular order. Also known as the moonlight fried noodles, the appearance is similar to the Wat Dan Hor but crowned with an addition raw egg. Stir the raw egg with the noodle and you can start slurping the slippery smooth hor fun. Well braised in dark aromatic soy sauce and laden with the essential PORK LARD and pork lard oil, the simple satisfaction!

Baby Octopus in Soy Sauce 八爪鱼

Poached baby octopus served with soy sauce, fried garlic oil and completed with fragrant fried garlic bits and chopped spring onions. The baby octopus was perfectly cooked. The texture was spot on, slightly crunch when you sink your teeth into the baby octopus followed by firm, chewy flesh. Even Sam whose never a fan of octopus/squid enjoyed this immensely and always request for it during our dine out at KL. >_<  The chili dipping with crushed peanuts went well with the baby octopus too. This is awesome, order or regret!

Verdict: Both their signature dishes definitely scored up to my expectation and safe to say that Tuck Kee is more than just a hype. They have clearly captured the hearts of their customers with reasonably priced decent food. If you are a fan of noodles, then Tuck Kee should be on your must eat list when you visit Ipoh.
