Taipei Taipei @ Publika

Since I had a quite satisfying meal at Taipei Taipei, Sunway Giza Mall before, it was no brainer that I had to have it again at their Publika outlet when we were there one fine afternoon.

Taipei Taipei is located same row as Coffee Societe & Coffee Stain.

Dressed in mellow yellowish lighting with a combination of black and grayish wall and furnished with contrasting red and black leather seats. The visually sumptuous restaurant is bedecked with plenty of framed photos, antique furniture (old cupboard, wardrobe & storage box), artificial plants and flowers as well as Mandarin oldies played at the background. I particularly love the red lanterns with flowery pattern which really heightening the oriental feel to a whole new level.

Further into the back of the restaurant lies an area well sectioned by red brick walls, suitable for those who need more privacy. There is also a projector screen showing old movie as well.

Outdoor seats also available as well.

Braised Pork Rice with Eggs (RM15.90)

All rice, noodle and stir fried dishes can be upgraded to a more wholesome meal as follows:-

Set A – side dish + black/green tea (RM6.00)

Set B – side dish + any drinks (RM8.00)

Set C – with side dish + shaved ice (RM10.00)

Braised Pork Rice 卤肉饭 (Lu Rou Fan), a Taiwanese classic comfort food of braised minced pork belly with soy sauce served on rice. Although this iconic rice dish is commonly seen throughout Taiwan but the flavor may vary from one region to another.

Covered under the beautifully cooked sunny side up was miserably amount of braised minced meat which was too scarce for that bowl of rice. The flavor also another disappointment factor, it was bland and nothing near to the “REAL” Taiwanese braised minced pork. They were not only skimp on the meat but also the gravy, rendering a dry and tasteless bowl of rice.

All rice dishes come with condiments such as pickled mustard, picked radish, braised tofu, braised egg and braised Chinese cabbage.

Dry Noodles with Pork/Chicken Chop (RM14.90)

Served with the same tasteless braised minced meat, braised tofu and half hard boil egg, the egg noodles was nothing to shout about.

Sam opted for fried chicken and it was totally the saving grace of the set. Served pipping hot with crispy and flavorful skin and the meat retained moist and tender.

Spicy Sour Noodles with Pork/Chicken Chop (RM14.90)

This bowl of noodles looked “tame” with just topped with chopped spring onions, chili and garlic.

This was how’s the noodles looked like after being tossed with dressing hidden underneath. The sauce was a sweat trigger concoction made from chili oil, finely chopped chili, garlic, coriander and spices which hit the palate with a punch and spicy sensation. I believe vinegar was added to for the sourness. Get this if you like appetizing spicy food if you don’t mind the oiliness 😛

The deep fried pork chop was scrumptious, freshly fried with a delicious coating.

We got ourselves their Signature Shaved Ice which was included in the set. Came with a enormous portion which can easily shared by 3-4 persons. Fine shaved ice drizzled with brown sugar syrup piled with tapioca balls, grass jellies, taro balls, sweet potato balls & Ai Yu,

Verdict: The Lu Rou Fan was a huge let down because it was entirely different from what I had envisioned it to be. Other food we’ve tried was just OK and definitely did not manage to convince for a revisit anytime soon.
