Before I can indulge in the “real” Thai fares at the The Land of Smiles , let’s warm up my tummy with some equally authentic Thai food at Thai Camp! Owned by Nick and his Thai wife, this humble neighborhood Thai restaurant offers some homey and traditional Thai cuisines that will definitely satiated your craving for hot & spicy food.

Nestled at Taman Paramount, P.J, right beside Restoran Mei Yen, Thai Camp occupied a rather small space which can be easily filled up with 20+ patrons.

Yum Ta Lae (RM 20.00)

Started off with the appetizing seafood salad consists of prawns, squid rings, minced meat, onions, deep fried egg, tomato, cilantro & chili tossed in lime dressing. It was indeed a great palate opener to welcome more food 😛

Don’t judge a book by its cover, this may not be an appealing looking dish but the flavors was inspiring. The century egg has a nice crispy outer with luscious creamy inner, stir fried with minced meat, chopped long beans, chili and deep fried holy basil. The exotic flavors can simply stimulated your palate and get your appetite kicking in full gear.

The deep fried fish cakes were slightly overcooked rendering a dry texture.

Tom Yum Ta Lae (RM 25.00)

The mandatory order when dine in Thai restaurant. The soup was well balanced and had a good kick of spiciness and sourness level which I like. For the price charged, I was happy with my pot of seafood Tom Yum brimming with huge prawns, squid, fish fillet, clams and mushrooms.

Other than the red Tom Yum soup, this White Tom Yum Chicken came in thick and creamy consistency with intense coconut milk flavors. Both the red and white broth share the similar spiciness but the later deftly infused with assorted herbs such as lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime leaves.

Highly recommended by Nic, the taste of this Northern Thai curry really surprised us. The first sip reminded me of Pork Leg Vinegar which is a common Chinese dish especially for confinement period. It had a pleasant savory and spicy flavors then finished with a mild sour note. The combination of flavors certainly not something we were expecting but it work harmoniously, give this a try and share with me your thoughts!

The steamed Tilapia was submerged in gravy concoction of lime, garlic, chili padi, and more on bed of Chinese cabbage. The gravy had an addictive fiery tangy sensation that will tempt you scoop up one spoon after another until the plate was polished off.

Both fried fish was perfectly fried in golden brown then bountifully covered with ingredients. Thai Camp’s signature was topped with fried shallots, onions, green mangoes, peanuts and spring onions while another one came with green mango salads. The fried fish had a extremely crispy skin but it could be better if more sauce is given.

The grilled pork belly possessed a pleasant smoky flavor. The pork belly with balance proportion of lean and fat meat was well marinated, went well with rice or a great beer snack.

Differ from the ubiquitous tube form, this sausage in piece form is a common street food at Northern region. It brings an unique sour taste which is the result of fermentation of pork and sticky rice. Wrapped with the accompanied crisp lettuce, chili, raw garlic and chili sauce, pop into your mouth and feel the pungent sensation.

Thai Camp also serve both savory and sweet thick toast featuring interesting toppings, we had two versions that evening.

A brilliant combination of Tom Yum sauce and chicken floss, imparted a mellow of spiciness and savory taste to the toast. Oh, so Thai!  ^__*

Toast with Butter Milk

A rather common sweet rendition with mixture of butter milk and drizzles of chocolate syrup.

Verdict: Thai food lover, this place would suffice to please your craving of hot and spicy food. Definitely no hesitation on recommending this place!
