Yen Can Cook ~ Fleece Flower Root Soup with Black Bean

Although majority businesses/retail shops are opened after the declaration of Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO), but I’ll still remain my practice of cooking at home or opt for food delivery/take away for my daily meal. So I will continue to share more recipes in my blog for the moment, enjoy!


Fleece Flower Root 何首乌, ‘He Shou Wu’ in Mandarin, is well known for its benefit in darkening hair color. It eases symptoms of premature aging, e.g. blurred vision, hair greying, weak knees and sore lower back. Besides that, it is also hailed as a natural herbal remedy for various health problems: improve blood circulation, improve the functioning of the kidney and liver, strengthening bones and muscles, good for detoxification, constipation and irregular menstruation.

This soup is suitable for those with blood an “Qi” dedicieny, poor blood and “Qi” circulation and poor eyesight.

 

Ingredients (Serve: 3-4)

1/2 Kampung Chicken, cut into chunks

40g Fleece Flower Root (He Shou Wu)

75g black bean, rinsed

10 red dates, pitted

20g dried longan

30g Astragalus Root 黄芪 ‘Huang Qi’

2500ml water

Salt to taste

A few ginger slices & cooking wine for blanching chicken

Step 1: Heat up a pan WITHOUT oil, dry-fry the black beans until skin cracks. Remove and set aside.
Step 2: Put the chicken into a pot of water and bring to boil, to remove blood and impurities. Remove, drain and set aside.
Step 3: Rinse all the herbal ingredients (except salt)and put them into a pot and add in water Bring to boil and lower the heat and let the soup simmer for 2-3 hours.
Step 4: Season with salt and serve.
