Ming Kee Porridge @ Bandar Menjalara, Kepong
This sight always intrigued my interest to check this place out and finally we were here for dinner two months ago.
Located in the heavily populated Bandar Menjalara, Kepong, Ming Kee Porridge is another dining option except steamboat, Dai Chow and Thai food. The setting of the restaurant is simple with two rows of seating on both side of the dining area and there’s a cooking station right at the entrance where those sexy roasted ducks being displayed to attract the passer by. Although the restaurant is air-conditioned, but due to the open kitchen, it can be quite warm if you’re seated near the cooking station/stoves like we did.
As its name implies, porridge takes centre stage in this restaurant, with good selection of other delicacies included assorted roasted meat (with rice or noodles), Wonton Mee and Dai Chow dishes (Pork Moi Choy, Kung Po Grog, Steamed Pork Patty, etc).
Iced Lemon Tea (RM4.50) & Herbal Tea (RM2.80)
2 Combination Roast Meat (RM21.00)
The look of the roasted duck drumstick was fabulous with glistening amber hued skin and meaty flesh. Served with sauce being drizzled on the meat, the duck skin was not as crispy as I would expected – first disappointment. Meat texture was the second disappointment, it was rather tough and the overall flavour was lackluster.
Roasted meat was above average with toothsome crunchy skin and the part we had was with good proportion of fat and lean meat.
Kampung Chicken Porridge (RM12.50)
The porridge was served in claypot to maintain the temperature, topped with drizzles of sesame oil and chopped spring onion. The porridge was velvety smooth, slightly flavoured with shredded ginger hidden inside. Portion was quite big which is good enough for two small eaters.
The chicken was good, well cooked and tender.
Peanut Salted Egg Porridge (RM9.00)
Other choices of porridge in the menu are Giant Prawn Porridge (RM63.00), Emperor Mud Crab Porridge (RM69.00 – pre-order), Herbal Chicken Porridge (RM32.50 – 2pax), Teng Zai Porridge (RM10.00), Frog Porridge (RM13.00), Minced Pork Porridge (RM10.50), Oyster Peanut Porridge (RM11.50), Roasted Pork Porridge (RM11.50), Fish Porridge (RM10.50) And Pork Innard Porridge (RM11.50)
Shrimp Wonton Soup (RM16.50)
There were 5 or 6 (can’t really remember) Wonton per serving. The sizable Wonton was filled with delicious filling of minced pork and prawns (not in whole though) and the soup was commendable too, flavourful and richly infused with flounder fish powder (which I found out in their FB Page).
Verdict: Not a bad choice at all if you want a tummy warmer porridge meal, good portion and the flavour and consistency suit my requirement of a good porridge. Roasted duck was a bit letdown and I think a return trip was on the cards since it’s within my regular food hunting place.

Looks pretty good but pity about the roast duck. My partner enjoys porridge but maybe this one not for him because he likes the rice grains to be still intact. This one the rice is all mushy. For me, I prefer rice hah…hah…
Haha, that means your partner likes Teochew-style porridge….where the rice grains are intact and you get to order a myriad of dishes to go with your porridge…..and not Hong Kong-style or dim sum-type porridge.
He refers to his preferred style of porridge as Hokkien porridge hee..hee…hee…
PH, rice grains to be still intact = Teochew porridge lor, what is Hokkien porridge btw? O.O
I prefer mushy one 🙂
I like such smooth porridge! Perfect for cold days. Awww…such disappointment from the duck.
Mel, I like smooth porridge like this too!
You should have stuck to what they’re good at….which is porridge as per their name…and not get ‘distracted’ by the roast duck at their counter…hehe! 😉 I love porridge of any kind…and I’d be attracted to the fish, frog and pork innards porridge. Hmm, flounder fish flavoured soup is like those you’d find in Hong Kong-style wonton mee places (Mak Chee’s for instance).
Kris, those roasted duck looked too good to be ignored lah!
ooo, i wonder if many people pre-order their mud crab porridge 🙂
Sean, I have no idea at all but I believe there’re fans of mud crab out there. 😛
damn i shouldn’t be looking at this just before lunch time!
KY, lesson learnt, haha!
