Penang Trip 2017 – Random Photos

Those are some random photos of my previous Penang trip which I have yet share with you guys, check them out!

Penang travel experience is not complete without trying one of the island’s must have delicacies – Asam Laksa. Of course there are countless of places offer Asam Laksa at Penang but we opted to have it at the famous Pasar Air Itam which hubby and I had a pleasant experience many years ago.

Pasar Air Itam Laksa

Jalan Pasar Road, 11500 Air Itam, Penang. (Beside the Air Itam Market)

Operating hours: 10:30am – 7.00pm, daily

Asam Laksa (RM5.00)

Located at at the foot of a popular destination, Kek Lok Si Temple, the traffic and parking at this area is quite horrendous. When we arrived, the stall was thronged with tourists within the limited space along the walkway beside the morning market.

Hubby and I imparted high expectation for this based on our previous experience but we were slapped with disappointment. The bowl of Asam Laksa filled with smooth, soft and slightly chewy rice noodles submerged in mashed mackerel tamarind base soup. There were shredded cucumber, onion, bunga kantan (torch ginger), mint leaves, chilies and the essential  Hae Ko (shrimp paste). The flavour was a bit diluted and lacked of that oomph factor to appeal to us.

Icy dessert and Mua Chee we got from the stall nearby the Asam Laksa.

Kek Lok Si Temple from far 😛 We didn’t do the touristy thing went up the hill because the weather was too hot, LOL

Dinner at Hard Rock Cafe, hotel guests can get 10% discount (or 15%?, sorry I forgot) off.

Check out my hotel review HERE.

I’m a loyal customer of Ghee Hiang sesame oil for its extremely fragrant aroma which is made purely from high quality sesame seeds. I like to add it to my meat marinade,  blanched vegetables, noodles, poached chicken and many more to enhance the flavour of the food. So, one of mission for this Penang trip was get some Ghee Hiang sesame oil for my self as well as for my mom to try out.

We went to Ghee Hiang lcated at Macalister Road which is a beautiful mansion with ample of parking lots.

Other than sesame oil, Ghee Hiang also offers other products as as their famous Tau Sar Pneah (mung bean pastry), Hneoh Pneah (brown sugar pastry), Beh Teh Saw(pastry with gooey maltose filling), Almond Cookies and White Coffee.

Mission accomplished!

  • Thanks for liking my hometown again. I have been eating that Laksa stall since I was a school boy and I actually know the owner’s family members. His brother in law is a Dato Seri who happens to be my best buddy long ago before i moved to KL.

I also like Ghee Hiang and Him Heang where both have their own specialities.

    • TM, there are definitely a lot of reasons to love your hometown and food is the main factor, as a foodie 😛
Too bad I don’t like their Asam Laksa anymore, any other recommendations as I’m going to PG this coming August.

  • I also like the Ghee Hiang sesame oil. Can get at supermarket over here.

  • Looks like a fun visit! Gosh it’s been three years since the last time I was in penang …

  • Why do you need to lug the Ghee Hiang all the way from Penang when it’s available here….different taste or the nostalgic factor? 😉 Ya, for some reason, your Air Itam laksa does look rather clear and diluted (the last time I had it was so long ago, I can’t remember what it tastes like).

    • Kris, good question! I think prices can be different if you buy from PG and KL, I guess lah because I really suck in remembering pricing >_< Not only sesame oil, I also got some Tambun biscuits too and I'm going to PG his coming August and I'll lug some GH sesame oil back again, hehe, you want some?
