Restoran Nyonya Makko @ Melaka
There are numerous of Nyonya restaurants in our historically rich city, Melaka but where to find the BEST? This task definitely not easy, even if you ask the locals, they’ll most probably couldn’t give you the answer. So as a tourist, we will judge by the popularity of that particular restaurant or reviews that shared on social medias. Were those reviews led me to a good restaurant? Read on.
We had lunch at one of the renowned Nyonya restaurant in Melaka – Restoran Nyonya Makko during my previous trip and the verdict after my meal was, ‘Taste is Subjective’. 😛
The restaurant was full house and there was no proper queuing system implemented. We had to ‘chuup” the table by standing beside it and wait for the diners finished their meal. #idontlikethis
The place is well decorated with framed photos, wooden carvings and good collections of Peranakan kitchenware. Tables were cramped at the dining area and I spotted some cookies and crackers were sold here as well.
Titbit (RM3.00)
A plate of crackers was placed on our table once we were seated and I thought it was complimentary until we got the receipt. =.=”
Ayam Pongteh (RM12.00)
A signature Nyonya dish that I know I had to order it when dining in a Nyonya restaurant. It’s a chicken stew with potatoes flavored with fermented soy bean sauce(tauchu) and Gula Melaka. Makko’s version was just passable in my book, the dish lack of that distinctive tauchu and Gula Melaka’s fragrance that I seek for. The flavor also not particularly pronounced.
Sotong Goreng Kunyit (RM17.00)
Arrived in lukewarm, the deep fried squid was soggy and oily.
Nyonya Chap Chye (RM9.00)
This was mere generic too, the flavour was nothing really impressive but nothing to complain as well.
Verdict: With so many good reviews I’ve read online (some even said this is the best choice when comes to Nyonya dining in Melaka), my dining experience certainly wouldn’t make it the best Nyonya restaurant in Melaka. Perhaps I’ve order the wrong dishes. Food was just decent but did not mind-blowing and I’ve had a better Nyonya meal elsewhere. (Read THIS)

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Loved the place so much when it was small and dim and run by some nice old ladies in sarong kebayas. I went back again many years later and I was most disappointed – wouldn’t care if I’d never ever set foot at that place again:

Suituapui, this was my first time here so no comparison, but I know I probably will not coming back again.
I hardly have nyonya food but I am a big fan of it!
Tried once in Malacca, 2 years ago, forgot the restaurant name though… :p
Hayley, is there any good Nyonya food restaurants at Taiping?
These days I don’t bother to try any nonya restaurants because those that I have tried, I find the cooking so so only.
PH, I believe there are some good ones, maybe we just don’t have fate with them yet 😛
Fully agree with you! Thanks.
I think it’s popular because of the affordable prices? Perhaps the cooking suffered due to the immense crowd. 🙁 Why is your husband covering his face?…..it’s not like we haven’t seen his face before….wakakakakaka! 😀
Kris, price is quite affordable I must admit but the taste really didn’t impress me >_<
He covered his face because I said I don't want to see his face in my photo LOL
ooo my hometown! ya, there are a lot of nyonya restaurants in melaka … nyonya makko is quite a survivor, i remember it from my younger days! 😀
Sean, although they have been operating for quite long times but unfortunately the food not really suite my taste bud. Do you have any restaurants to recommend to me?
You may try Bibik’s Kitchen locates at Penang
I have bookmarked this place for my next visit. The prices are very reasonable, never mind the long wait. It means they are definitely good lah!
TM, you can have a try since they are so popular, maybe you will like their food.
free titbit? nothing is free these days oh… also, the standard dropped so much over the years n i’ve stopped visiting long ago! i prefer aunty lee @ Taman Sinn anytime!
Mark, I’ve heard of Aunty Lee but are they still operating as I heard that the owner (Aunty Lee passed away)
