Food Hunt @ Penang (August 2018 Trip)

Google ‘Penang Food’ and the result shows mostly street food that recommended by various of medias and bloggers. Food hunting or street food hunting to be precise, is a mandatory activity that shouldn’t be skipped in your itinerary whenever you travel to Penang.
Other than enjoyed our splendour hotel stay as well as the F&B outlets in the hotel, we didn’t miss the chance to indulge in the rich Penang street food culture which showcases diverse array of cuisines and flavours.

Goodall Cafe 万和冷气饮食中心
Jalan Gottlieb, Taman Selamat, 10350 George Town, Pulau Pinang.

Randomly chose from the list of food court recommendations on internet, we had our first dinner at Goodall Cafe located Jalan Gottlieb, Goeorgetown (opposite Penang Chinese Girls’s Private High School). I found that there is another Goodall Cafe at Tanjung Tokong when I was writing this post, are they under same management? Any Penangite can enlighten me?
Occupied a large space with indoor and outdoor seating (open space & roofed), Goodall Cafe houses more than 20 food stalls which offer wide variety of hawker fares including Char Koay Teow, Fried Oyster Omelette, Asam Laksa, fried rice, Wonton Mee, Popiah, Curry Mee, chicken rice, BBQ chicken wings, Mee Jawa, Satay, curry fish head, grilled fish, pizza and Teppanyaki.

Char Koay Teow
A decent plate of Char Koay Teow with good ‘wok hei’ and all the ingredients of Chinese waxed sausage (Lap Cheong), cockles (but we omitted as we don’t eat), crunchy bean sprouts and fragrant egg bits.

Fried Oyster Omelette
I’m afraid the fried oyster omelette with combination batter of tapioca starch and beaten egg not really something I would appreciate. The was omelette dressed with sweet and mild spicy sauce which was a bit too wet for my liking but the enjoyed the fresh and plump oyster.

New Lane Hawker Street
Lorong Baru, George Town, 10450 George Town, Pulau Pinang

Initially we wanted to try out the 888 Hokkien Mee at Lebuh Presgrave but it was closed during our second night at Penang. (Check out my previous post of 888 Hokkien Mee @ Bayan Baru HERE) So we settled our dinner at New Lane Hawker Street upon recommendation of hubby’s colleague.
Located in front of Sunway Hotel, Georgetown, the whole street (Lorong Baru) is lined with more than 20 pushcarts and there are also food stalls housed in the coffee shops along the street. Enticing food aroma from the stalls really triggered our “hunger hormones” and we had hard time to decide what should we have. I really wish to try ALL the food here, from Asam Laksa, Chee Cheong Fun, Char Koay Teow, Char Kueh Kak, Pork Porridge, Duck Koay Teow Th’ng, Apom Manis, Lor Bak and many more, but too many food, too little stomach space ~>_<~

We were seated at the outdoor of the coffee shop beside 118 Hotel with beautiful mural.

Poached Baby Octopus
Got this from one of the stall in the coffee shop, the poached baby octopus was rather fresh, dressed with soy sauce and oil concoction , topped with generous amount of crispy fried garlic.

Wonton Mee
Nothing to shout about and the wonton was a bit skimp on the meat filling.

Char Koay Teow
One of the busiest stalls on this hawker street with steady stream of customers waiting for their noodles. Cooked with charcoal fire, the Char Koay Teow came with adequate ‘wok hei’ but definitely not the best I’ve tasted. For a small plate that costed RM8.00, I was surprise to know that additional RM1.00 is charged for add-on cockles. (I thought cockle is default ingredients for Penang CKT?)

Popiah
Not memorable~~

Chee Cheong Fun
Served with shrimp paste (Hae Ko) and chili sauce, the steamed rice rolls was soft and slippery smooth, generous sprinkles of sesame seed added fragrance to it. Love!

Duck Meat Koay Teow Th’ng
Not really impressive too~~
Note: According to my Penang friend, the price range at this place is a bit higher than other food courts.

77 Food Yard
295, Jalan Burma, George Town, 10350 George Town, Pulau Pinang.
Our food hunt continued on the next morning and this round we were brought to this coffee shop near the Pulau Tikus wet market. Getting a parking at this area could be a pain in the neck and we ended up parked our car at a new mall right behind the shop.

Char Koay Teow
From the stall right at the entrance of the coffee shop, our third plate of Char Koay Teow of this trip was good with good smoky flavour imparted from frying process as well as the enticing flavour of the soy sauce, chili, egg and all the ingredients.

Duck Meat Koay Chap

My first try on Koay Chap and it was rather disappointed. I got mine with only duck meat, it came with smooth curled flat rice noodles and half a hard boiled egg served with dark colour soup topped with fried garlic and chopped coriander. The soup did not leave me with a strong impression as the flavour was a little too subdued.

Char Kueh Kak
We also had this fried rice cake from a food truck outside the coffee shop. It was rather good for my not-too-fussy standard, the soft rice cake cubes were beautifully flavoured with a mix of sauces. I like the textural contrast from the crunchy bean sprout and Choy Poh (preserved radish).

Penang Road Teochew Chendul
27 & 29 Lebuh Keng Kwee, 10100 Georgetown, Penang.
Operating Hours:
Mon-Fri: 10:30am to 7.00pm, Sat-Sun: 10.00am to 7:30pm

Our food hunt ended with this famous Penang Road Chendul with perpetually long queue whenever I saw people posted photo of it. Arrived quite early at 11+, no queue was spotted and we opted for dining in at coffee shop next to the stall.

Teochew Chendul

My verdict: I wouldn’t say this bowl of Chendul is fantastic, the shaved ice was quite coarse and it lack of the distinctive Gula Melaka which is the soul of this dessert. It was just good enough as a refreshing icy treat but definitely not worth the time queuing under the hot sun.
These are the hawker/street food that I’ve tried during my previous Penang trip, a 3D2N stay in this food heaven certainly not enough to savour all the good food here and I totally couldn’t spare time for any cafes hopping >_< I’ll be back, DEFINITELY!

I see hits and misses. I would love to go on a food adventure like this. Just waiting for a chance to go to Penang. When I do, will check back here to avoid those so so ones hah..hah…
PH, don’t wait, plan a trip now, haha!
I think you could make slightly better selections of dishes at the various places you went to. Example, kuih chap is better at night at Kimberly Street, and perhaps the curry mee is a better choice at New Lane, etc.. but it’s also always good to explore and try for your own, who knows we may discover some hidden gems kan? 😀
KY, as I said I have too little time at the island and I just had my meal at the most convenient places for me ~>_<~ But on the optimistic side, at least my craving fixed, hehe 😛
penang and malacca street food are the best! 😀
Sean, I know right, just can’t resist those mouth-watering delicacies!
The Penang Road Teochew Cendol….any difference in taste from the ones in KL (of the same brand)? 😉 Love all this street food! ^.^
Kris, I never try KL one but the visit was intentionally because hubby’s colleague brought me there, so must ‘give face’ lor, right? LOL At least I tried the infamous chendol at there was no queue! Haha!
Ohh so yum…I would wish to have a bigger stomach if I go Penang. So much food to eat.
Mel, yawor, go with more people then you can try more!
