Cecil Street Market @ George Town, Penang
For most tourists like us, Cecil Street Market located at Lebuh Cecil, George Town would’ve been mistaken as just another local market. Actually, you’re not entirely correct because the market is known to be one of the biggest hawker center combining both wet market and food court.
The market is sectioned into two zones, one side is where you can find fresh produce, clothing, and household items like the usual wet market and the other area is a food court that houses quite a number of amazing local eats.
The interior of food court – assorted of food stalls and seating are scattered in front of the stalls as well as the al-fresco area.
Hokkien Mee & Lor Mee
This Prawn Mee or locally known as Hokkien Mee was good from the tasty prawn broth and its ingredients. Sliced lean pork, small prawns, egg wedges and the pork ribs that we added on, accompanied the yellow noodles and beehoon topped with fried shallots and a spoonful of sambal (chili sauce) on the side.
Lor Mee – A mixture of yellow noodles and beehoon drenched in thick gooey broth, topped with braised egg, braised pork, fried shallots, fried pork lard, garlic paste and sambal. Not a fan of this delicacy and I didn’t try also. 😛
Curry Mee – Brimming with ingredients such as coagulated pig blood cubes, cockles, tofu puffs, prawn, fish ball and dollop of chili paste. The curry broth was aromatic, savoury and spicy with mild sweet note, and the creaminess from the coconut milk was just nice too.
Dry Wonton Mee – Deep fried crispy Wonton and blanched vegetables served atop the al-dente noodle which was dressed with a concoction of dark soy sauce and pork lard oil. It’s KL style “black black” Wonton Mee that delivered great satisfaction.
Pasembur – Known as “Cheh Hu” in Hokkien which means green/raw fish. This Chinese version Pasembur (Indian Rojak) is milder in flavour with variety of fritters, jelly fish, tofu, shredded cucumbers and jicama, doused with thick sweet potato dressing.
There’re several roasted meat stalls at one of the section in the food court selling not only the usual roasted chicken, BBQ pork (Char Siew), roasted pork (Siew Yoke) but also Chinese sausages (Lap Cheong) and grilled pork jerky (Bak Kwa).
We got a portion of Siew Yoke and it was decent. Crispy skin but I was hoping the flavour was more robust.
♥Verdict: Definitely a place that you should put into your Penang food hunting list!

Don’t bother trying the Cecil St market curry Nothing great and the long wait for more than fourty minutes for a miserable bowl curry mee is not worthy People who pack curry mee are served first and in those in the quece have to wait
Ksloh, taste is quite subjective I would say and I’m sorry to know about your not-so-good experience at this place. There are many makan places in Penang, you can always try out others. 🙂
