Grandma Guest House 石文丁阿嬷家 @ Batu Pahat, Johor
After tapao-ed food from the food court, we proceeded to our “actual” dinner place…..
Famous for its dinner with beautiful sunset view, Grandma Guest House is one of the most recommended must-eat places in Batu Pahat. However unfortunately, we were there late (8.10pm) and missed the sunset view but the good thing was we didn’t have to wait for table or food as this place is said to be often packed and long waiting for food during weekends and public holidays.
Grandma Guest House is located in Kampung Segenting, a fishing village in Minyak Beku, which is about 8 km away from the main town of Batu Pahat. This village has a couple of popular tourist spots such as Lover’s Bridge for the attractive sunset view and the “fish touching temple” – Chong Long Gong Temple which according to local belief, touching the giant Arapaima Fish can bring good fortune (will share about this temple in the future).
Parking is available in the village and one need to walk through the village houses which will be difficult for elderly and young child. It is recommended to arrive earlier or makes reservation, especially on weekends.
The rustic and simple indoor dining area.
Further inside is the wooden terrace perched on the water overlooking The Straits of Malacca. This al-fresco dining area indeed offers a relaxing ambience and perfect spot for enjoying the breeze and sunset watching.
The Lover’s Bridge at night looked pretty creepy, LOL
Seafood takes center stage in the menu (the restaurant is in a fishing village after all), but there are other options as well that range widely from pork ribs, spring chicken, bean curd dishes, eggs, vegetables, soups, noodles and fried rice. Mala Seafood Boil (aka shell out) (RM72), BBQ Pork Ribs (RM, BBQ Party Platter (RM98), Boiled Fish Slices with Pickled Cabbage (RM58) are some of their signature dishes.
Charcoal Grill Pork Delight (RM36.00)
It’s a huge slab of grilled thick pork rib doused in sweet savoury gravy, served along with coleslaw and a few pieces of old school five spice biscuits. Beautifully grilled with a lovely charred edges, the pork rib wasn’t as tender as our Chinese Dong Po Rou (although it looks like from the appearance) but had a good bite texture.
It’ was an unquestionably huge portion for 3 of us and we were struggling to finish it. (≧◇≦;)
Steamed Barramundi (RM63.60)
There are a few flavours for steamed fish, included braised, dried radish, Cantonese, Teochew, garlic, and this fried & steamed style recommended by the staff (if I heard it correctly (^_^;) ).
There wasn’t sign of the fish was being fried before steamed but anyway, the dish was rather irreproachable in taste and texture. Drenched in an appetizing sourish broth that’s enough to develop the addiction once the first sip of broth was savoured. It was very much tasted like the Thai style steamed fish, minus the spiciness (as per our request).
Verdict: The ambience was without doubt very chilled and enjoyable. Food wise, both dishes that we had were above average, which should satiate both locals and tourists, with substantial portion

The pork ribs look beautifully caramelised with well-charred edges (yum) but the sauce looks like it’s really sticky-sweet.
Kris, the pork ribs sauce had a pleasant sweet note which is acceptable but I don’t like it’s consistency, too starchy to my liking. >_<
