Nyonya Memoirs @ Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall
If you plan to visit Melaka these few weeks, I suggest that you should make ‘Nyonya Memoirs’ as part of your itinerary. Being the first ever live environmental theatre production featuring Melaka’s iconic Peranakan heritage, ‘Nyonya Memoirs’ is brought to you by Hatten Group and only runs for 3 months premiering in May 2015 until 19th July 2015. The inspiration of this project is in line with the State Government’s goals to highlight local culture with the main objective of promoting a deeper appreciation for the city’s Peranakan heritage.
I was invited by Hatten Group to watch the ‘Nyonya Memoirs’ performance two weeks ago and I was truly impressed.

Walk through the walkway, the audiences will be greeted by some of the quintessential elements of Baba Nyonya culture in Melaka such as their house facade, the interior of their house, the costumes as well as the food.
We were on a stroll down memory lane, journeying back to the opulent era of the 1960’s once we step into the set.
Assorted of shops with exquisite details provide plenty of photography opportunities.
Yours truly with the fortune teller 😛
You can even order a drink from this stall in the set!
The show began with the introduction by the story teller.
Synopsis:-
A fateful tale of a young couple unfolds as a wealthy Nyonya, Bao Zhu, accepts the proposal from the love of her life, Zhang Min – a poor, common Baba. Their engagement soon turns bitter when Bao Zhu’s powerful and prominent family forbids the union. Divided by their social differences and driven to the deepest depths of heartache, can the true love between Bao Zhu and Zhang Min rise above to conquer all?
Bao Zhu’s mansion ~ The living room
‘Nyonya Memoirs’ definitely not your typical sit-down kind of theater. The innovative concept makes the audience part of the production by moving them with the characters from scene to scene. Sam and hubby even brought the stools running around the place, LOL~ Indeed a culturally informative ‘real-life’ walk down memory lane.
Interactive scenes with the audiences.
There are many sing and dance scenes in the show too.
The dining hall scenes ~ The Tok Panjang (Baba’s banquet)
Not going to elaborate more about the story, you just have to experience it yourself! The theater is performed in Mandarin with a mix of Peranakan dialet. For those who can’t understand Mandarin, there are screens with subtitles provided.
The bedroom scenes ~ the touching part.
Happy ending and audiences are invited to join the grand wedding ceremony at Lover’s Bridge in the mall.
Verdict: It was indeed an eye-opener for me to be able to watch such an entertaining and unique kind of performance. Definitely highly recommended!
There are shops selling the Peranakan clothes and accessories right outside the theater.
Group photo with the actors & actresses.
