Riverside Food Court 海亁街美食中心 @ Batu Pahat, Johor
Hubby was invited to attend the wedding luncheon of his ex-colleague at Johor Bahru on last November, Sam and I were tagged along too. Instead of staying at Johor Bahru, we decided to stay at Batu Pahat, a small town located on the northwest coast of the of Johor.
This was our first time set foot in Batu Pahat so before the trip I had a list of recommendations from friends and online articles for Batu Pahat’s must-eat and must-visit.
It was raining when we arrived at our hotel at Batu Pahat circa 5pm+, so we freshen ourselves up while waiting for the rain to taper off. Our first meal was some takeaway food from this Riverside Food Court which we savoured in car while driving to the actual dinner place that we were going.
Riverside Food Court is one of the popular dinner spots for both locals and tourists, with good variety of food offerings such as Wonton Mee, Chicken Rice, Dai Chow, Nasi Lemak, grilled fish, Oh Chien, Otak-Otak, Satay, BBQ chicken wings and many more.
This BBQ chicken wings stall is one of the recommended food in this food court and they were indeed quite deserved the reviews. The chicken wings were meticulously grilled to a shiny mahogany finish that was bursting with smokey and delicious flavour in every bite. The chili sauce was good, tangy and spicy.
The vendor also sells grilled Otak-Otak.
Right beside the BBQ chicken wings stall was this Satay stall which offers pork and chicken Satay. It’s beyond doubt that we bought this also – the Pork Satay to be precise.
From the appearance, this Pork Satay was different with the ones that I had in KL like THIS and THIS. The meat were in flat sliced form with a layer of sauce coating on it. The flavour also wasn’t quite the Satay I’m more accustomed to, which I don’t know how to describe it. The marinade had the usual lemongrass and spices flavour with a nuances of “Chinese taste profile”. The texture was adequately tender and the spicy peanut dipping was decent as well.

Ah, a snack before the wedding dinner. That’ll come in handy if the dinner starts late…which it always does…although I don’t know how one can handle eating satay (with satay sauce) in the car though…lol.
Kris, I think you have some misunderstanding. That was a wedding luncheon and these food we tapao was kind of “pre-dinner” as we went to another place for our “actual” dinner.
Eating Satay in the car is easy, the passenger can eat as usual, but the driver only can eat the skewer without the peanut sauce to avoid dripping, haha!
What a nice food adventure! My late uncle was from Batu Pahat. I have been to JB when I was small and all I remember is that we can watch Singapore TV. LOL!
PH, our TV at hotel was so lousy with very limited channels and the TV reception was poor even couldn’t watch Malaysia channels. >_<
Pork satay for me please!
KY, luckily we can get quite good pork satay here in Klang Valley~
