Ramen Taiko @ Mont Kiara Shoplex (Updated – Closed Down)

Tucked in the quiet corner of Mont Kiara Shoplex for more than 10 years, Ramen Taiko specialized in Japanese Ramen and also serves a variety of other Japanese dishes.

Iced Lemon Green Tea

Their signature drink of Iced Lemon Green Tea was refreshing, as a green tea lover this definitely suit my tastebud more than the usual lemon tea 😛

Hiyayakko

Kick started our dinner with this Japanese cold tofu appetizer, nothing fantastic but good enough to prep the palate for more to come 🙂

Aigamo Smoke (RM 18.00)

Smoked duck breast with scallions

Taiko Gyoza (RM 12.00)

Nicely done pan fried gyoza; crispy  bottom layer with juicy filling of mined pork, chives, cabbage, dried shrimps and turnip.

Our mains came while we still digging in our delicious gyoza, the first few dishes were ome Chinese influenced dishes.

Taiko Yakiniku Butabara

stir fried thinly sliced pork bellies with jullienned carrots and onions was light in flavor and showcased the sweetness from the vegetables thoroughly.

Hoikoro (RM 20.00)

Hoikoro is what we called “Hui Guo Rou” in Mandarin literally means “cooked twice”. The dish was a vibrant composition of pork slices, shredded carrot, capsicum, cabbage cooked with bean paste sauce. It has strong flavors that we Malaysian taste bud fond of and it’s savory enough to go with bowls of rice 😛

IMG_1107

Taiko Subuta (RM 25.00)

This Japanese version of “Ku Lou Yok” aka sweet sour pork was milder in flavor, I like the crunchiness of the meat still retained and the sprinkles of sesame seed add an pleasant nutty flavor to it.

Taiko Buta Kakuni (RM 25.00)

IMG_1114

Resembled to our Chinese “Dong Poh Yok”, this wobbly braised pork belly had tender lean meat and melt-on-tongue fats that really irresistible. It’s an indulgence worthy of every calories it packs 😛

Salmon Ginger Roll

Featuring thick cut of sliced salmon wrapped with filling of cucumber, crabstick, fish roes and pickled ginger. Yes, you read it right, is pickled ginger which usually acted as palate cleanser in Japanese meal. The combination might be sound weird but believe me, pop the whole thing into your mouth and enjoy the maximum satisfactory~

Soft Shell Crab Maki

Another unique piece that brought to our table that evening was this special maki wrapped with rice paper. Consisted of numerous ingredients such as unagi, shredded cabbage, mango, avocado and tamago, just to name a few. The flavors and textures blended together in perfect harmony.

Curry Rice Don (RM 18.00)

A huge serving of Japanese curry rice served with miso soup also part of our dinner that evening. The luscious creamy curry broth laden with potatoes, carrots and pork chunks was not spicy with a sweet note towards the end which I think is suitable for kid.

Goma Hiyashi (RM 25.00)

The chilled ramen dish appeared in alluring colourful presentation with assorted ingredients such as tomato striped, sliced egg omelette, julienned cucumber, BBQ pork, crab stick, corn, sliced seaweed, yellow mustard, sesame and a dressing of sesame sauce.

The various ingredients and the sesame sauce gave it a multitude of  flavors which was simply intoxicating even for someone like me who doesn’t fancy cold noodle!

Taiko Chashu Ramen (RM 22.00)

The ramen was steeped in clear pork broth and topped with more than generous amount of chashu which will never fail to make the Japanese chashu lover gleam with joy. Also spotted in this bowl of ramen were some bamboo shoots and perfectly done poached egg.

IMG_1143

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen (RM 20.00)

Packed with chashu slices, flavored soft boiled egg, corn, bamboo shoots, fish cakes and seaweed, the broth of this ramen was intensely flavored from hours of simmering of pork bones hence the milky colour. Some might compare this with the version of some ramen joints, not the best but certainly decent enough to recommend 🙂

Kimuchi Ramen (RM 22.00)

As an avid fan of Korean kimchi, I enjoyed this immensely! Laden bountifully with kimchi, pork slices and bean sprouts, the sour and spicy broth really triggers the craving addiction I have until I almost polished off the bowl clean 😛

Gomoku Ramen

A Chinese inspired ramen dish resembled “Kong Fu Chao”. The broth was well infused with sweetness from the vegetables with good flavor of eggy taste.
Verdict: It was indeed a great find of this hidden gem that had been so many years at KL. Food overall was satisfying and I like the homey ambiance.
