Chinese New Year 2013 Set Menu @ Phoenix Restaurant, Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie

It’s been a while since my last visit to Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie and when the invitation to check out their Chinese New Year offerings was gladly accepted.  I never knew Holiday Inn had a Chinese restaurant and to be precise it located in Glenmarie Golf and Country Club.

Phoenix Restaurant ~ The capacity of the restaurant was not too big, approximately 55 people at one time and there is also a private room for 12 persons. Restaurant can be expanded and turned into a big hall for events like wedding to accommodate more people.

Salmon Yee Sang

What is Chinese New Year without Yee Sang, right? So, we started the dinner by tossing the Salmon Yee Sang.  All the julienned vegetables, fruits and nuts blended nicely creating a contrasting burst of flavors and textures.

The sliced Salmon prettily arranged in rose shape and topped with shredded ginger, chopped chili and lime wedge.

Braised Vegetarian Sharkfin Soup with Bamboo Pith and Crab Meat

People who know me well understand that I’ve stopped eating sharkfin a few years ago but I’m glad that Phoenix Restaurant using vegetarian sharkfin for this soup. Brimming with crab meat and bamboo pith, the thick soup was fabulous and  every spoonful left a pleasant umami flavor to the palate.

Crispy Roasted Chicken and Mongolian Sauce

The chicken dish might looks “weird” with all the skewers placing on top but believe me, you really have to try this!

IMG_3717

The roasted chicken was decent but it was the Mongolian sauce that impressed! The right balance of sweet and sour and robust in flavor –  tangy, sour, sweet and a little bit of spicy. The fruits skewers balance out the richness of the Mongolian sauce.

Steamed Siakap with Teow Chew Style

The steamed fish was aesthetically presented with an “olive tree” standing on the plate 😛  The fish was crowned with copious amount of pickled vegetables, mushroom and tofu then drenched in an appetizing sourish gravy. The fish was fleshy and unquestionably fresh, the condiments managed to enhance the natural sweetness of the fish.

Stir Fried Prawn with Vietnamese Sauce

Another “WOW” when this brought to our table, what a “huge” dish!

IMG_3726

The prawns were swimming in a pool of Vietnamese sauce, tasted savory and the presence of curry powder added a little kick to it. One may mopped up the sauce with mantao served along too.

Braised Two Kind Of Mushroom with Layer Beancurd and Vegetable

A must-have item on any Chinese New Year menu, it was delicious in its simplicity.  Phoenix’s version has some Macadamia nuts thrown in too!

Seafood Fried Rice

This is not your ordinary fried rice but canned dice fish and black bean was added into it but I can barely taste them perhaps the ginger in the fried rice was slightly overwhelming. Overall the fried rice was fabulous though, fluffy with aromatic egg-y flavor 🙂 I usually don’t care for fried rice but this was too good to pass up 🙂

Century egg was served along with the fried rice too. Topped with abundance of shredded ginger and crushed peanut, a twist to your normal serving method of century egg.

Chilled Rambutan and Nata De Coco Syrup

A cooling dessert. The mint leaves gave it a refreshing sensation.

Crispy Fried New Year Cake and Pancake

The fried Nian Gao ball was crispy yet light on the outer with chewy inner and a filling of Nian Gao and yam. A dessert that won everyone’s vote!

Another dessert of red bean pancake may not as outstanding as the above but still taste good though.
