Ya, I’m still writing my makan-makan at Penang during December 2020, but Late Better Than Never, right? ヾ(^ ^ゞ

Toh Soon Cafe 多春茶座

Cecil Street Market

This time, we were brought to Ah Bah Ko Steamboat at Jalan Jelutong by my partner in crime because she knows hubby & I are hotpot fanatic. Since the restaurant is located on a busy road, parking can be slightly challenging here. We parked at a parking in front the shoplot on the opposite road.

A cooking station was set at the entrance and the further inside was the simple dining area with wooden tables and plastic chairs. The place was bright and rather comfortable equipped with both air-conditioners and fans.

Ah Bah Ko is specialist in grouper fish head hotpot (which is rather rare in Klang Valley) served in traditional charcoal steamboat pot. There were two options (portions) of fish hotpot set which priced RM68.00 & RM128.00 respectively. Choices of soup base for ala carte included their signature Yam Milky Fish Head, Chicken, Tom Yum and White Tom Yum. You can also add-on more ala carte ingredients from their extensive list of menu comprised the usual meat balls, meat slices, seafood, bean curd rolls, assorted veggies, mushrooms and noodles.

Light bites of fried stuffs were available too.

Apart from the hotpot, Ah Bah Ko also offers soup noodles with your choice of soup base and noodles type.

Condiments offered to pair with the hotpot – homemade chili sauce and fried garlic oil.

Set B (RM128.00)

The hotpot was served in the traditional aluminium steamboat pot with long chimney with burning charcoal.

Ingredients that came with the set included fresh / deep fried grouper fish fillet (we had half portion each), meat balls platter, vegetables and enoki mushrooms.

The soup base is the soul of a good fish head hotpot. The milky fish head soup was lusciously rich and blessed with a creaminess that not cloying. There were fish head chunks, Chinese cabbage, deep fried yam sticks and tomato wedges that nicely toned down the richness and provided a pleasing burst of acidity.  We had a few rounds of soup refilling and it did not dilute the piquant flavour of the broth, every spoonful was full of satisfaction.

These were the add-on ingredients we had to go with the hoptpot.

Pork Slices (RM10.00)

Minced Meat (RM8.00)

Quail eggs (RM7.00)

Fried Luncheon Meat (RM10.00)

♥Verdict: The price definitely wasn’t cheap but rationalized with a better quality ingredients (grouper fish). Portion wise, the set and add-on ingredients that we had is suitable for 3-4 persons, for a fulfilling meal. The flavour of the fish head soup was spot on, I loved the melt-in-your-mouth yam sticks that well absorbed the flavour of the broth. Any yam fans here? 🙋
