Taman Emas Kopitiam @ Jalan Gottlieb, George Town, Penang
Continue my previous Penang trip post…..

Presgrave Street Hawker Center
The last destination of my Penang food hunting excursion had me at Taman Emas Kopitam located along Jalan Gottlieb, opposite Peng Hwa Chinese Girl School.
The kopitiam occupied a corner shop and housed several food stalls such as Asam Laksa, Char Kuey Teow and Chee Cheong Fun.
Our main target was the Asam Laksa, which is manned by two young and pretty ladies.
We were greeted by their wall of fame once we stepped into the shop. Vast media coverage and accolades proudly displayed on the wall and the most eye catching was none other than the medal and certificate of winner of The Battle of Penang Hawkers Masters 2011 – Category Asam Laksa.
Price list – Other than the main star of Asam Laksa, they also offered fried spring rolls, Chai Kuih and Kuih Talam.
Asam Laksa (Big-RM6.50) & Spring Roll (RM1.20/pcs)
The laksa broth is sourish and moreish and filled with loads of fish flakes. It also has a good balance of herbs and spices as well. Slippery smooth rice noodles, shredded pineapple, cucumber, onions, vegetables, mint leaves, torch ginger flower and shrimp paste summed up the bowl.
We also learnt how the Penang Lang enjoy their Asam Laksa. Dip/soak the spring rolls into the Laksa soup, let it absorb the broth and eat it!
Char Kuey Teow (with duck egg – RM8.00)
The avid fan of CKT didn’t miss the chance to have a try on this too. It was as good as it looks, with good hit of ‘wok hei’. Portion wise, there were generous amount of Chinese waxed sausages, crunchy beansprouts, chives and two big prawns (we omitted the cockles). Served on banana leaf, this CKT was slightly wet, packed with nice spicy savoriness which was satisfying delicious. We had this with duck egg which was more prominent in eggy flavour.
♥Verdict: Definitely a good bowl of Asam Laksa in my book which was memorably wonderful. I also tapao-ed 2 portions back to KL.

I liked both the looks of your assam laksa (full of fish!) and CKT (lots of lap cheong!)….not usual to find lap cheong in CKT from Penang….yum. I used to wonder why some places sell fried spring rolls together with assam laksa….and now I know, it’s to dunk into the assam broth! ;D
Kris, I thought Lap Cheong is one of the usual ingredients for CKT? Fried spring roll + Asam Laksa soup, taught by my Penang friend too, very good pairing indeed!
