Barn Thai Restaurant & Bar @ Plaza 33, Petaling Jaya
When my foodie friends call for a gathering, I know there are not only catch-up and laughter but also great food that come as a package! This round we had our casual meet up at Barn Thai Restaurant & Bar located at Plaza 33, Petaling Jaya.
The facade of the Barn Thai with Thai-style roof entrance arch and the eye-catching horse statue is enough to evoke the curiosity of patrons to have a peek inside but when you step into the dining area the automatic door, there are more surprise waiting for you!
Dressed with dim lighting, the restaurant is elegantly furnished with wooden wall and flooring with matching teak wood tables and chairs. Were were seated at the upper deck that evening.
The place is spacious and airy with tasteful decoration such as photos of Thailand scenery.
Also the unique Tuk Tuk decorative piece made from wire.
Other Thai knick-knacks and decorations that made up the restaurant a charm and cozy place. I can see the bar area is located right after the corridor behind the sliding door at the dining area when I went to washroom. Oh ya, you must, is MUST pay a visit to their toilet, one of the prettiest I’ve been, no kidding!
The beverages menu is extensive included juices, sodas, cocktails, mocktails, wines, beer and coffee.
Chicken and Papaya Salad (RM 23.00++)
Papaya salad or known as Som Tam in Thai, consisted of shredded raw papaya, long beans, cherry tomatoes, peanuts, onions and dried shrimps dressed in lime sauce and fish sauce. From the ingredients you have already knew this dish definitely a perfect palate-opener to awake your appetite! Beware, this might be looked unpretentious but the bird eye chilies can set your mouth on fire! The accompanied grilled chicken was well prepared and help to tone down the spiciness and sourness.
Mixed Seafood Red Curry (RM 38.00++)
Instead of the usual Tom Yum, we had this Thai red curry served with a beautiful ceramic bowl with holder. Laden bountifully with shrimp, squid, mussels, brinjals submerged in creamy and spicy curry soup. The spiciness was moderate, not too spicy with pleasant hints of herbs.
Baked Tom Yum Chicken (RM 28.00++)
The tender pieces of chicken was slather with thick and luscious Tom Yum gravy packed with glorious hints of lemongrass, galangal, onion and chili.
Deep Fried Whole Sea Bass with Thai Ginger Sauce (RM 79.00++)
The deep fried sea bass was covered with abundance of ingredients such as chopped ginger, onion, garlic, green peppercorns, Thai baby eggplants and fried curry leave for extra fragrance.
Pla Tod Ka Min (RM 29.00++)
We had a fish lover that evening, hence this was another fish dish 🙂 The fish was marinated with tumeric, garlic, lemongrass, galangal and black pepper then deep fried till totally crispy from the skin to the flesh. The fish had an awesome crunchiness and the dipping chili sauce pack a nice fiery punch not only went well with the fish but all the dishes we’ve ordered ^__*
Stir-Fried Eggplant with Minced Basil Chicken and Shrimp (RM 32.00++)
I never dare to prepare any eggplant dishes at home because it absorbs oil and turn soggy if doesn’t cook correctly. Here at Barn Thai, the eggplant was adeptly prepared, not overly cooked and retained beautiful shape and colour. Stir fried with minced chicken, fresh prawns, chili, onions and plenty of basil leaves, it was mild in flavor but I like the aroma of basil lingering in mouth.
Stir-Fried Brocoli with Shiitake Mushroom (RM 23.00++)
The only non-spicy dish on that evening, very common and nothing to shout about.
Totally pigged out with a Thai feast that night!
To round up our dinner, we had two Thai’s signature dessert which were:-
Mango with Sticky Rice (RM 12.00++)
Sweeten glutinous rice drizzled with coconut milk served with mango.
Tub Tim Krob (RM 8.00++)
Also known as Red Ruby, another classic Thai dessert consisted of diced water chestnut coated with tapioca flour and jack fruit strips in chilled coconut milk broth. Very refreshing and I like the generous ingredients given.
Verdict: Food is above average, ambiance and environment are top notch. A great place for family or friends gathering or unwind at the bar section for some live band performance.

I love Thai food…especially their two famous desserts which you had eaten…ahahha
Other than that, I am quite skeptical to try because they can be over generous with sugar.
Thai really can eat sweet huh.. LOL

Sorry about your experience and I can’t help you on the reservation because I’m not working in the restaurant.
Trying to call you but always engaged. Do u have live music tonight?
Extremely upset with their negligence on answering phone calls. Been trying to get in touch with the Plaza 33 PJ branch for 2 continuous days for booking but to no avail. Nobody seems to be bothered to answer the calls. If your number published is not right, do take the initiative to update at all sites. This is purely a nuisance!
Leen, sorry to heard about your bad experience, I’m trying to connect them via FB but it seems like no longer existing and I guess the restaurant was closed down. Sorry again for the inconvenience caused.
