Wellcome Seafood @ Sunway Mentari
I’m rather “unadventurous” when come to “dai chow” food. Hubby and I always stick to a few familiar restaurants around our neighbourhood which offers affordable decent dishes that suit our taste buds. We were recently invited by friend to try out a seafood restaurant at Sunway Mentari for some unique dishes.
Wellcome Seafood, nestled at the busy district of Sunway Mentari. If you familiar enough with this area, it is located opposite BMS Organic and next to Mr DIY with a bright yellow facade and eye-catching red signboard.
Although there isn’t any decoration to speak of but the place is spacious and airy enough for a comfortable dining experience. Check out the aquarium with assorted live seafood placed at the back of the restaurant.
Occupied first floor of the shop house, there are more tables available as well as a private room for those who need more privacy.
Pan Seared Oyster in Supreme Soy Sauce 头抽皇煎生蚝 (RM9.80/piece)
Served in halved oyster shell, the plump oyster was cooked just right, tender with the juiciness still retained. The oyster was meticulously seasoned with supreme soy sauce, moreish yet didn’t overpowering the original umami taste of it.
Deep Fried Spare Ribs 香口雪花骨 (RM9.00)
The boneless spare rib was beautifully deep fried till golden brown. The meat with good ratio of lean and fat meat was richly infused with marinade. The flavors was really impressive that it’s worth hogging it to oneself!
Steamed Talapia with Fermented Minced Chili 南洋跺椒蒸鱼(Market Price)
Upon seeing this steamed fish speckled with copious amount if minced chili, I began to perspire. Fortunately it didn’t as spicy as it looked. Steamed with house made fermented minced chili with hint of sourness, the sauce was appetizing without too acidic on taste bud. The fish from the aquarium we just saw at the ground floor was undoubtedly fresh and tender.
Braised Sliced Crystal Prawn with Beancurd 明虾片豆腐 (RM60.00)
The house made bean curd was silky smooth and adequately seasoned. The thick savory gravy infused with essence of the crustacean boosted more flavors for the light flavored bean curd.
Sweet and Sour Chili Crab 星洲辣子蟹
They are having a promotional price of RM28.00 for two crabs (prepared in variety of cooking methods) for the month of September. Drenched with pool of sweet and sour gravy, the crabs were fresh and quite meaty. This definitely a worthy order for the price paid.
The sauce just compelled you to mop it up with the fried mantou.
Fried Ostrich with Special Sauce 酸菜炒鸵鸟肉 (RM35.00)
Stir fried in chef’s special sauce, the ostrich meat was surprisingly not coarse like I would expected to be. I personally love the pickled carrot which provided a lovely sour note that teased my palate. The dish also perfumed with handful of Basil leaves that imparted a mellow herbal nuances.
Stuffed Minced Pork Beancurd 双面皇豆腐 (RM14.00)
This to me is another rendition of “sandwich” where the the minced pork was sandwiched in between two pieces of house made bean curd. Paired with soy sauce gravy and aromatic fried garlic, it is suitable for both adults and kids.
Fried Spinach with Egg 月光芫菜(RM20.00)
Served in a claypot with heat underneath, the spinach submerged in thick stock with generous amount of crab meat and a raw egg. I enjoyed the smooth slippery texture of of the soup and vegetables after the raw egg being stirred.
Stir Fried Kailan 2 Ways (鸳鸯芥兰)
The presentation attracted our attention once this dish was served to the table. The stems were simply stir fried with garlic while the leaves were shredded then deep fried. That ball of crunchy fried Kailan leaves looked like seaweed to some of my dining companions 😛
Chef’s Specialty Yam Fried Rice 天下一品炒香饭 (RM20.00)
The staple dish of fried rice was served at the end of the meal and I can’t resist to fill my bowl full after I’ve tried an initial spoon. The “wok hei” was so distinctively present and the rice was fluffy with an eggy edges. The addition of yam cubes and Ebiko made the combination work fabulously.
Verdict: We’ve tried something different than our usual “dai chow” fare, taste and price wise, very affordable the ingredients was fresh. Don’t mind come back if I’m at the vicinity.

Honestly, I love all the dishes you ate esp the Chilly Crab and special Yam Fried Rice.
I hardly invite guests to eat dai-chow too as I am hopeless in ordering them.
I’m good in ordering dai chow food, next time bring me ok?
The promotional price of RM28 for two crabs is certainly a bargain! Don’t know who started this kailan 2 ways but it became an instant hit 😉 I noticed that this tai chow place serves really small almost single-like portions for some of the dishes…great for small families who want to try a variety of dishes.
Portion not really as small as you think actually ^__^
I want those oysters!
sorry I can’t share with you as it is too good to be shared >_<
Boneless spare ribs? Wow. Sounds delicious. Must definitely go try 😀
Definitely a good choice!
i want the spinach with egg! 😀
Definitely a not-so-boring version for a vegetable dish.
Can bring in own whiskey bottle?? While we dine there?
Do they sell beer?
