Makan Nyonya @ Estadia by Hatten, Melaka
A Melaka trip will never complete without trying the Peranakan/Nyonya food. But driving along the forever jam Jonker Street and walking under the scorching weather search for Nyonya restaurant definitely not a good idea huh. Fret not, on my last trip to Melaka, I got to try a pretty authentic Nyonya food right in the hotel I stayed.
Located on the third floor of Estadia by Hatten, Makan Nyonya Restaurant is an all-day dining restaurant offering a blend of Peranakan cuisine and local specialties.
We were in awe before entering Makan Nyonya, this wall of colourful tiffin carriers at the entrance definitely a sight to behold.
The restaurant offers a comfortable dining experience with its sleek and simple designed interior, further accentuated by the beautiful plants. I like how the natural sunlight penetrate through the huge window panels gives the space a warm and inviting vibe.
Outdoor seating also available for those who prefer some natural breeze.
Buffet style daily breakfast also served at Makan Nyonya from 6.30am to 11.00am.
Settlement Mango Mix
If you’re in Makan Nyonya, do not attempt to miss this! A refreshing concoction of pickled mango and pickled plum, it was too good that I had hubby’s serving and got an additional order for myself (total 3 cups!)
Nyonya Ikan Bilis
The appetizer was this crunchy deep fried anchovies accompanied with onions, chili and lemongrass. The spiciness and sourness definitely a perfect palate-opener and my senses awaken with every bite.
Fish Maw with Chicken Meatball Soup
Swimming in clear soup full of vegetable sweetness, the fish maw successfully absorbed all the essence from the broth. The chicken meat balls were lightly seasoned and the whole combination works well enough to leave a positive impression.
Yellow Rice
Sambal Bendi
The sambal supposed to be slathered on the steamed lady’s fingers but since Sam was dining with us so we requested it served separately. The sambal with discernible dried shrimp flavor went well with the lady’s fingers.
Nyonya Fish Head Curry
Nyonya food emphasizes on robust tastes with a dominantly spicy and sour flavor. This fish head curry definitely exhibits the authentic Nyonya food flavors by delivering a punch and spicy sensation to our taste buds. Came in with a beautiful red hue, the curry broth not only spicy but carried a pleasant sour note that went well with all the ingredients such as red snapper fish head, long beans, brinjal, tomato and bean curd puffs.
Sambal Petai Prawns
A classic rendition of prawns and petail cooked with sambal. It was good but nothing really outstanding to shout about. I was happily polished off all the petai and hope for more 😛
Spicy Chicken Tomato
A lovely hit of sourness and mild spiciness was pronounced in this dish, it was rather welcoming to the palate and flood your rice with the gravy certainly a must!
Nyonya Cendol
Our dessert of icy cendol with Gula Melaka served separately simply had me squealed in delight. Pour in your desired amount of Gula Melaka and enjoy a delectable bowl of goodness with slivers of cendol, red bean, corn kernels and black glutinous rice.
After a good night rest, we came back to Makan Nyonya again for the breakfast the next morning.
The buffet spread was decent, the common fares of Western and local style breakfast were available.
Had a pipping hot bowls of porridge with all my favourite side dishes and perfectly done soft boiled egg definitely the best way to kick start my day!
Honey directly from the honey comb, cool right?
