Yen Can Cook ~ Pan Fried Nian Gao

Don’t know what to do with those leftover Nian Gao from Chinese New Year? Just simply pan fry them like what I did!

Nian Gao 年 糕, literally translated as Year Cake or Chinese New Year’s Cake, is one of the auspicious food to eat during Chinese New Year. This sweet, chewy glutinous rice and brown sugar cake is homonym for “higher year.” or in other words, the cake symbolizes achieving new heights in the coming year.

Ingredients (Serve: 4-5)

1 Nian Gao, sliced into 1cm thick

1 egg, beaten

1/4 teaspoon salt

Cooking oil

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 1: Mix the egg and salt together in a bowl.
Step 2: Heat  some cooking on a pan over medium heat. Put in the sliced Nian Gao WITHOUT egg coating till both sides are slightly browned and soften.
Step 3: Dip the pan fried Nian Gao (Step 2) into the egg mixture and pan fry again. This can help the egg mixture coat better on the Nian Gao.  Pan fry each side for 1 – 2 minutes until golden brown.
Note: Double dip the Nian Gao slices into the egg mixture and pan fry each side for another minute for more “eggy” taste.
HAPPY COOKING!
