Yamatatsu 山達小舖 @ Old Klang Road

Like Papasan Canteen that I shared not long ago, Yamatatsu is another eatery that I wanted to try for the longest time. Far distance from home which hinder the visit to this area (Old Klang Road) but thank you to the lion dance performance at Pavilion Bukit Jalil, we finally tried out Yamatatsu after the performance.

Note: I like to watch lion dance (acrobatic lion dance, to be precise), so we watched quite a few performances in the mall during the past CNY.

The interior was a long and narrow space, dressed in light woody tone, illuminated by hanging light bulbs that imparted a cozy yellowish hue. There were usual tables and stools on one side of the shop and bar counter seats on another side with a view of the chefs at work. Yamatatsu serves Japanese-Taiwanese fusion food, hence the decoration evoked Japanese culture – manga and anime posters, noren curtains and sake bottles.

Like Papasan Canteen, Yamatatsu only seat completed parties and only walk-in is served (no reservation).

Price of food in their menu clocked in below RM30 per serving, which was pretty reasonable for the current standard of living in Klang Valley. There are good selection of rice dishes such as Oyako Don, Taiwanese Chicken Chop & Duck Rice, Tamago Kake Gohan and Braised Minced Pork Rice (Ru Rou Fan), just to name a few. If you prefer noodles, there were 6 options in the menu included Taiwanese Mee Suah, Braised Pork Ramen, Cha Soba and etc. Other items such as Oden, fried chicken, grilled Saba Fish, Gyoza and assorted pickles are available to pair with their extensive list beverages such as Kombucha, beers, sparkling drinks, cocktails, highball, Umeshu and Sake.

Honeydew Green Tea (RM6.00)

Salt Pepper Corn (RM15.50)

If you’re in Yamatatsu, do not attempt to miss this! Very much raved by patrons and it indeed merited praise. Sweet corn tossed in sticky salt and pepper seasoning, splashed with a robust garlicky flavour. Some might find the dish a bit too salty but I really love it! Finger licking good goodness!

Shredded Chicken Rice (RM9.50 + extra egg RM2.50)

This dish might look simplistic in presentation and ingredients but certainly not in flavour. Originally from Jiayi, a city in Southwestern Taiwan, the is a simple rice dish topped with shredded chicken, egg and pickles, drizzled with onion oil and gravy. The shredded chicken was just some plain poached chicken, the savoury gravy was the uplifting element that provide the dish the soul!

Tamago Ebi Mentai (RM18.50)

Another simple creation but enable to provide the greatest satisfaction. Prawn and Tamagoyaki slathered with thick, savoury and creamy mentaiko mayo sauce, sitting on a bed of Sushi rice. The ultimate comfort food one can ask for.

Siew Ha Ha Udon (RM14.00)

The noodles dish on the other hand was rather run-off-the-mill. Nothing to complaint but nothing to praise either.

Verdict: If I were staying nearby, this place would become my regular eating spot! Love the food here, and of course the affordable price!
