Awesome Canteen @ Taman Paramount, P.J
Paleo diet, a new term in gastronomy scene where all kinds of processed food is impermissible. Also know as “Caveman Diet”, it’s an effort to eat like we used to back in the day which literally means if a caveman couldn’t eat it, neither can you, anything we could hunt or find – meats, fish, nuts, leafy greens, regional veggies, and seeds.
Although this is indeed a very healthy practice however there are not many places in Klang Valley offer menu designed specially for Paleo eaters. Awesome Canteen nestled at Taman Paramount, Petaling Jaya most probably one of the few places that serve Paleo menu.
Awesome Canteen, a intriguing named restaurant that can easily ignite one’s curiosity to check out whether this place really that “awesome”?
Stepped into the restaurant and you will be greeted by a tree, no kidding, a real tree in big pot in the middle of walkway! Not only one but two potted trees in the dining area together with small potted plants placed on every table, blended harmonically with the contemporary designed space while added liveliness to the cafe. Dressed in warm lighting, Awesome Canteen is filled neatly with recycled furniture and simple hanging lamps that give it a sleek appearance.
The busy bar counter.
We were ushered to the last table at the end of the restaurant which most probably the best seat because I felt like dining in the garden with those vertical lush greenery. This corner also provide more privacy and away from the chatters of the crowd.
Adjacent to our table is a glass cabinet filled with some fun and old-school stationery and boardgames. Also decorated the place are eclectic mix of vintage items such as old TV, brass lampshades, an old typewriter & etc
Cream Soda (RM 8.90) & Acai Berry with Pomegranate Tea (RM 7.90)
Since I was here when the water rationing period, so the paper cup was forgivable~~
Lime Soda (RM 8.90)
Hot Americano (RM 6.00)
Hot Mocha (RM 10.00)
Paleo Beef Burger (RM 21.90)
The huge beef burger was accompanied by a side of salad, sweet potatoes and scrambled egg. The salad and sweet potatoes were well executed but the scrambled egg was a tad bland and overcooked.
The signature Paleo burger, no burger bun and substituted with grilled Portobello mushrooms. Sandwiched in between was a juicy beef patty, melted Swiss cheese and guacamole salsa. It was a sloppy mess and every components complements each other very well.
Mushroom Swiss Cheese Melt Chicken Burger (RM 16.90)
The Swiss cheese melt to provide a more luscious and moister bite to the dry minced chicken patty. Brilliantly add in sweet caramelised onions which went so well with the salty Swiss cheese.
Mexican Spicy Beef Burger (RM 21.90)
Vegetarian Burger (RM 16.90)
Not in the menu but custom made upon request 😛 No chance to savor this that day but my friend enjoyed it immensely.
Spaghetti Carbonara with Turkey Bacon (RM 20.90)
Came in big portion, the pasta was coated with rich and creamy sauce however it was obviously too dry and could have been better with more sauce.
Salted Caramel Dark Chocolate Moist (RM 11.90)
Adequately moist cake with delish chocolate sauce with hint of saltiness.
Walnut Caramel Pie
The pie was just average.
Verdict: Food wise, the paleo menu unequivocally suit my diet practice (I normally skip carbohydrate intake during dinner) and I like the ambiance nonetheless. Is the food at Awesome Canteen living up to the name? Drop by and allow your palate to make its judgement!
