Ho Meal @ Taman Selayang Jaya
Although Selayang is one of the neighbouring districts to the place I stay (Kepong), but I rarely explore to this town which is more famous for its natural attractions on the outskirts, such as recreational forests and hot springs (Taman Eko Rimba Kanching Waterfalls and Selayang Hot Spring).
Today’s sharing is a home style restaurant serves one of the Melacca celebrated dishes – chicken rice balls.
Housed in the residential area of Taman Selayang Jaya, Ho Meal’s open space dining area is furnished with simple wooden tables and chairs, equipped with both ceiling and wall fans to ensure moderate comfort level. Potted plants are placed in every nook and corner to add liveness to the place.
Other than the aforementioned Melaka style chicken rice balls served with steamed or fried chicken, Ho Meal also offers Pandan Rice Nasi Lemak served with fried chicken or Masak Merah Chicken and ala carte dishes such as Masak Merah Eggs (RM4.90-2 eggs), Bean Sprouts (RM6.90), Masak Merah Lady Finger (RM6.90), Pork Ball Soup (RM8.90-5pcs) and Fried Egg (RM1.50).
Twin Set – CA2 (RM44.90)
The set comprises 1 steamed chicken whole leg, 1 fried chicken whole leg, 8 rice balls, bean sprouts, pork balls soup and 2 drinks. Single portion and ala carte order for both chicken rice and Nasi Lemak are available too.
For the drinks, we had Fresh Lemon Tea & Sweet Osmanthus Tea.
The food is cooked to order, so it takes about 10-20 minutes to be served.
The steamed chicken whole leg was tender and succulent, with thin layer of skin which I really appreciate.
Fresh off the wok, expertly fried to perfection with crunchy light battered skin and moist juicy flesh. It scored in the taste department as well, the marinade was ravishingly flavourful. Their chili dipping sauce packed quite a nice fiery punch.
The rice ball was beautifully infused with chicken stock, it was soft and fragrant with a light hint of ginger (thankfully not overwhelming), and perfectly complemented by the accompanying chilli sauce. Yup, the chilli sauce goes well not only with the chicken, but with the rice as well. I like mine with adding dark soy sauce, how about you?
Crunchy and plump blanched bean sprouts.
Pork ball soup was pretty standard in flavour.
Verdict: Decent and wallet friendly meal. Now I know what to recommend if someone ask me what to eat at Selayang. (^-^)

Both the fried and steamed chicken looks good….but not a fan of chicken rice balls as the rice is too mushy and dense (which I know it has to be in order to be able to form into balls). >.<
Kris, you’re right, the rice was a bit mushy but since it’s well flavoured, so it’s forgivable, hehe. 😛
