Kedai Makan Soon Lai 顺来 @ Batu Pahat, Johor
Our last meal at Batu Pahat before heading back to KL was settled at Kedai Makan Soon Lai, a famous Kuey Chap restaurant in the town. Patrons are greeted by pots of different ingredients in dark brown broth on the cooking station once stepped into the restaurant.
My Makan Makan at Batu Pahat – Macau Kopitiam, Grandma Guest House & Riverside Food Court.
Soon Lai is located diagonally across the century-old Thean Hou Temple, the oldest Chinese temple in town, for the veneration of Mazu, the Goddess of the Sea. We arrived at the peak lunch hour, circa 1pm and the restaurant was in full swing. One needs to place order and pay at the counter before being seated. Our food took some time to serve, so be warned ya. ⚠
Pork innard lovers would be delighted by the wide range of options in the menu, such as congealed pig blood, pig tongue, pig ear, pig head, various of pig intestines, and pig skin. Other items included chicken feet, bean curd sheet, pork belly, Mui Choy, peanuts, century egg, Lobak, meat balls and luncheon meat. All these ingredients can be eaten with Kuey Chap or white rice for a more substantial meal.
Apart from the main menu, there are snacks like Otak-Otak, Rojak and Portuguese Egg Tart to add variety to the menu.
Kuey Chap (Big – RM2.00)
Submerged in dark brown broth, the Kuey (it’s a broad term for food that made from rice or glutinous rice flour) in thin broad shape were soft and smooth. The soy sauce base broth with mild hint of herbal was light tasting and easy on the palate. Fried garlic and shallot added fragrance to the broth too.
Stewed Egg (RM1.30/pcs), Pork (RM8.00), Chicken Feet (RM1.30/pcs), Bean Curd Sheet (RM2.70)
All the ingredients were brilliantly braised till tender, fully absorbed the flavour of the delicious broth.
Verdict: Without any anticipation, our lunch at Soon Lai turned out to be a rather pleasant one, if only the waiting time to be shorter. Tasty food and wallet friendly pricing, I certainly don’t mind to come back again!

It’s good you enjoyed the food in spite of the long wait. The first thing that caught my eye was that big pot of curry! After having tried kuey chap twice, I’m afraid I am not a fan.
PH, Surprisingly hubby & I enjoyed the food as we normally don’t fancy this type of noodle. Oh, that’s nor curry, it is bean curd sheets in braised gravy.
ooo this is my kinda shop! Love everything about it.
Ky, I know you will like it! Johor & Penang Kuey Chap is totally different food, right?
I don’t know what the menu (in Chinese) offers…but I was amused that there are still things available at RM0.20 and RM0.30! The kuey chap looks quite different, these are broad sheets, not rolled up like the ones we have in KL.
Kris, those sold in RM0.20 & RM0.30 are the takeaway boxes, haha! I assume the Kuey can be in different shapes. (∵)
