KL Zai Crispy Roasted Pork @ SS2, P.J

It’s quite late when we picked up Sam from 1U after her gathering with her friends. We drove around SS2 area to find our dinner inspiration and this KL Zai roasted meat restaurant caught hubby’s attention.

The restaurant was rather vacant since it was already 8.30pm. The setting of the dining area is simple, there isn’t any decoration to speak of.

KL Zai hails from Klang and assorted Cantonese charcoal roasted meat such as roasted herbal/pipa duck, roasted pork (Siew York), BBQ pork (Char Siew) and roasted chicken took center stage in the menu. These goodies are served with either rice or noodles. There are small selection of porridge (Roasted Duck with Pickled Vegetables RM13, Pork Stomach & Lala RM18, Boiled Chicken RM12), soups (Pork Stomach Lala Soup RM28 & Lala Soup RM25), side dishes (Jelly Fish Cold Dish RM12, Thai Style Chicken Feet RM12) and desserts (Black Sesame Paste RM7, Peanut Soup RM7 & Red Bean Soup RM7).

Part of the price list for your reference.

Sour Plum Water (RM4.50)

Double Combo Noodle (RM13.00)

The roasts served with rice or noodles can be customized as single meat, double combo or triple combo. Hubby had this double combo noodle with selection of roasted chicken /roasted pork (Siew Yoke)/Char Siew. (RM12.00 if served with rice).

Other options of double combo included roasted duck/roasted pork/Char Siew – noodle RM14 or rice RM13 and steamed Kampung Chicken + any 1 meat – noodle RM15 or rice RM14.

Hubby opted for his favourite Char Siew and Siew Yoke and they turned out to be quite  enjoyable in terms of texture and flavour. The dry Wonton mee had a pleasant crunchy texture, it was overall a well executed combination.

Roasted Duck Soup Lai Fun (RM15.00)

The Lai Fun (rice noodle) was served with a robust tasting broth (bone pork broth I assumed) and there was some preserved vegetable to provide a burst of acidity to cut down the richness of the broth. Couldn’t comment much on the crispiness of the roasted duck skin since they were submerged in the broth, but the meat was fairly good, it was decently marinated and flavourful.

The Lai Fun is thinner than the laksa noodle that we accustomed to, but the texture was identically chewy.

Roasted Chicken Noodle (RM9.00)

Sam chose to have soupy noodle with single meat – roasted chicken. (RM8 if served with rice)

Other options included roasted pork (noodle RM11/rice RM10), Char Siew (noodle RM10/rice RM9), Roasted Herbal Duck (noodle RM11/rice RM10) and Steamed Kampung Chicken (noodle RM13/rice RM12).

The roasted chicken was nothing out of ordinary.

Complimentary dessert soup – both peanut and black sesame soup were rather diluted and lack of that distinctive nutty fragrance.

Verdict: Quite a wallet friendly option I would say. Food wise, the roasts was decent, although not the best I’ve tried.
