Restoran Pik Wah 碧华楼 @ MABA Building, K.L
This was my mom’s birthday lunch at one of the MICHELIN Bib Gourmand restaurants – Restoran Pik Wah.
The cute custom made jelly cake for the occasion.
Located at the basement of MABA (Malaysia Basketball Association) Building, Restoran Pik Wah is a long established Chinese restaurant in Kuala Lumpur which opened its door in year 1971. The dining area is spacious, brightly lit and fully carpeted, furnished with draped chairs and table completed with table cloth. The private rooms are available as well in addition to the main dining area.
Advanced reservation is recommended should you have plan on visiting the restaurant on weekends.
Like most of the typical Chinese restaurants, Pik Wah’s large menu offers an extensive list of dishes with wide variety of cooking styles for seafood, pork, poultry, vegetables, noodles and even desserts. Most of the dishes come with portion options of small, medium and big to cater different groups of customers.
Steamed Muang Patin Fish with Soy Sauce (RM165.00 – RM15.00/100g)
For fish, there are choices of fish slices dishes, fish head, fish belly or whole fish. Our rather big Patin Fish (for 11 adults & 2 kids) was decently prepared with soft flesh and complemented by the soy sauce, further perfumed with handful of Chinese parsley and spring onion.
Crispy Char Siew with Honey Sauce (Big – RM85.00)
One of the recommended dishes on review platform, the barbequed pork was somewhat didn’t live up to our expectation. The dish was named crispy Char Siew but it wasn’t able to provide the crispy texture that I would have hoped. The flavour also missed the mark, it tasted on a more savoury side but still lacked an oomph factor to appeal to me.
Braised Hainan Chicken with Wonton (Whole – RM90.00)
Served with a plate of fried Wonton, the whole chicken was submerged in a pool of thick brown sauce in a claypot with fire burning underneath to maintain the temperature of the dish. The chicken wasn’t really meaty but quite tender on the texture. The sauce had a mild herbal taste with savouriness that went well with the chicken.
Deep Fried Prawn with Mayonnaise (Big – RM150.00)
This dish is a sure winner with everyone of all ages. Crunchy fried prawns dressed with creamy mayonnaise, studded with some canned diced fruits, along with century egg wedges with pickled ginger.
Longjing Beancurd with Pumpkin Sauce (Medium – RM35.00)
Although it was named Longjing beancurd but I could barely taste the tea flavour in the tofu . (-_-; The pumpkin sauce wasn’t my preferential taste too and I thought it could have been better with more seasoning.
Fried Lily Bulb Combo with Macadamia Nuts (Medium – RM40.00)
My favourite dish of that afternoon. It was perfectly executed with all the vegetables included lotus root, celery, sweet peas, fresh lily bulbs, woodear fungus and carrot remained its crunchiness and flavours.
Verdict: Total bill was RM715 after taxes which included rice (RM2.00/bowl), tibits (RM5.00/item) and Chinese tea (RM3.00/pax). Overall, our lunch at Restoran Pik Wah was just average and I can’t seem to find a good reason to come back again.

Happy Belated Birthday to your mummy! I love to eat all those dishes.
The custom made cake looked very beautiful 😍😍 it was not easy to produce it with many colours.
Where you bought the jelly birthday cake?
Hi Linda, sorry for the late reply, this is the jelly cake seller:- https://www.instagram.com/ponydepastry_jellycake/?igsh=cG4yZ3IxOTJybjJz
Wow, your mom’s birthday lunch at Restoran Pik Wah looked like a delicious celebration! 🎉 The custom-made jelly cake must have been a sweet surprise. I love how you described the restaurant’s ambiance, with the spacious dining area and private rooms. It sounds like a great place for a gathering.
I couldn’t help but drool reading about the Steamed Muang Patin Fish with Soy Sauce. 🐟 The soft flesh and the fragrance of Chinese parsley and spring onion must have made it incredibly tasty. And even though the Crispy Char Siew with Honey Sauce didn’t meet your expectations, it’s always interesting to try different flavors and see what appeals to us individually.
The Braised Hainan Chicken with Wonton sounds mouthwatering, especially with that thick brown sauce. I can almost imagine the tender chicken melting in my mouth. 🍗 And who can resist the Deep Fried Prawn with Mayonnaise? The combination of crunchy prawns, creamy mayo, and the surprise of diced fruits and century egg sounds like a delightful treat.
It’s a shame that the Longjing Beancurd didn’t have a strong tea flavor, and the pumpkin sauce wasn’t to your taste. Sometimes, dishes don’t always match our preferences, but it’s all part of the culinary adventure. 🍽️
Now, the Fried Lily Bulb Combo with Macadamia Nuts got me excited! Vegetables with a crunch, lotus root, celery, sweet peas, lily bulbs, woodear fungus, and carrot, all in one dish? That’s a winner in my book! 🥕🥬
A Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant and you can’t find a good reason to come back again says a lot especially with the high prices and small servings (the tofu dish doesn’t even have enough pieces to go round!). With an oriental charm and situated in the vicinity of Petaling Street, I’m sure tourists (gwai loh) will flock to this place with its Michelin mention since the prices won’t mean a thing based on their currency exchange…lol! 😉
