Sam Kan Chong @ Jinjang Utara, K.L

When mention about the best Sam Kan Chong pork balls noodle, Jinjang Utara is always one of the places in the list, which I’m proud to tell that it’s the place where I grew up.

Sam Kan Chong (三间庄) in Cantonese, it refers to the three adjacent shops in Jalan Silang, KL – where this dish originated from. But nowadays, Sam Kan Chong has become the name of this particular noodle dish – pork balls noodle, with the pork balls are not shaped into balls but flat and rectangular, served together with sliced roasted pork sausage and minced meat.

Very straight forwardly, Sam Kan Zhong is used as the name of this restaurant. Indoor seating and al-fresco dining were available but I always prefer outdoor for an airy and bright dining environment.

Other than their signature Sam Kan Chong pork noodle in both soup and dry version, they also offer pork ribs & pork stomach in peppery soup (served with noodle or rice), as well as curry mee.

Sam Kan Chong Pork Balls Noodle – Soup (Small – RM7.50)

As usual, one can choose from the noodle choices of meehoon, yellow noodles, kuey teow or Lou Shu Fun (rat noodles/silver needle noodles), served dry or soup.

The broth was rather mild tasting for me but still decently flavoured and savoury.

Sam Kan Chong Pork Balls Noodle – Dry (Small – RM7.50)

Although I omitted the minced meat for my bowl of dry noodle, it didn’t effect the deliciousness of it. The soy sauce concoction was beautifully infused with aromatic pork lard flavour, not too salty and sufficiently coated the noodles.

Springy and adequately season, the pork balls palatable and I always add on extra serving to satisfy the craving.

The roasted sausages (Siew Cheong) was equally tantalizing with a pleasant smoky flavour and faint hint of rice wine. The pork balls and roasted sausage are undoubtedly a match made in heaven to complement the noodle.

Verdict: It’s a good bowl of Sam Kan Chong and satisfactory guaranteed. Actually there’s another notable Sam Kan Chong noodle stall located inside the kopitiam right opposite this restaurant which I have been eating since I was a kid. Both are well worth checking out if you’re looking for Sam Kan Chong noodle.
