W.A.W Restaurant (Wong Ah Wah) @ Jalan Alor, K.L
When it comes to legendary street eats in Kuala Lumpur, Wong Ah Wah (W.A.W.) reigns supreme. Nestled along the vibrant Jalan Alor, this no-frills Chinese restaurant isn’t just a favorite among locals — it’s also a must-visit culinary stop for celebrities, artists, and foodies from around the world.
This is the magnet that bring everyone to the same table – W.A.W’s renowned charcoal roasted chicken wings.
The expansion from a single shop to multiple shoplots which signifies the popularity of the restaurant. The stretch of shops offer large seating capacity on the indoor and outdoor.
Like most of the Dai Chow style Chinese restaurants, W.A.W offers wide variety of stir fried dishes, noodles, rice and even Yong Tau Foo and Satay also include in the menu. There are good selection of Ikan Bakar (Portuguese Grilled Fish) as well.
Signature Roast Chicken Wings (RM4.50/pcs – minimum order 2pcs)
The star of the show. Glossy, caramelized, perfectly charred on the edges, with that addictive smoky sweetness only charcoal can deliver. Crispy skin gives way to juicy, flavorful meat — and the house chili dip? Game changer.
Wat Dan Hor (RM11.00/1 pax)
Slippery flat rice noodles bathed in a silky egg sauce with tender pork and spring onion. I liked how the generous wispy slivers of egg ribbon imbued the delicious eggy flavour to the sauce.
Hokkien Mee (RM11.00/1 pax)
Thick fat noodles stir-fried in dark soy sauce with cabbage, pork slices, pork lard, and plenty of “Wok Hei” (that elusive smoky breath-of-the-wok). Sticky, savory, and soul-satisfying.
Verdict: W.A.W’s signature charcoal roasted chicken wings lives up to the hype and it certainly worth a go if you’re in downtown KL.
Whether you’re a KL local or a hungry traveler chasing down the best bites in town, Wong Ah Wah is where the night truly begins.

Wahhh …. I wish I could go there and enjoy the charcoal grilled chicken wings! I am now thinking about wat tan hor and Hokkien mee. LOL!
PH, you should try at least once, maybe bring your hubby with “Chinese stomach”, hehe. 😛
Ah, WAW’s grilled chicken wings is well-known…especially with tourists. I’ve eaten it a long time ago but when a place starts to cater more to tourists, it’s time for us locals to go elsewhere…lol! 😀
Kris, I went also because I was at that area, LOL.
