Last 2 weeks I was invited by a friend to join her for dinner at one of the host in Withlocals to experience the latest dining trend at Malaysia ~ the underground supper club or also known as closed door restaurant. It is a social dining eating establishment operated out of someone’s home, generally which provide a more intimate, dinner party style experience.
We arrived the home chef ‘s home located at Subang on a Sunday evening for dinner. The owner Eric was busy preparing our Nyonya theme dinner while we chatted with her wife at the living room.
Chilled Lemongrass Drink
A fabulous thirst quencher for the hot weather!
Boiled Chicken Soup
Other than chicken, this soup was boiled together with a type of root plant as shown as above which has a distinctive flavor tasted similar with onion.
Pie Tee
One of the significant appetizer of Nyonya cuisine.
Homemade crispy top hat shells
Jiu Hu Char
Sweet and juicy julienned jicama, cuttlefish and carrot .
Filled the Jiu Hu Char into the golden shell and add a dollop of Eric’s secret chili sauce to perk up the flavors!
Nyonya Style Steamed Fish
Drenched in vibrant red gravy, the fish was fleshy and nicely steamed with the juiciness still retained. The luscious gravy had the just balance spicy and sour and redolent of spices. Flooded your rice with the awesome gravy seem like compulsory here!
Curry Chicken
The flavor of this curry chicken was just mediocre in my books but I’m still enjoy the tender meat and chunks of potato that well absorbed the all the flavor from the curry.
Stir Fried Mixed Vegetable
Assorted of vegetables contributed the pleasant crunchy factor to the dish, very mild in flavor and light to the palate.
Onde Onde
Been eyeing on this since the dinner started because this is my favourite Nyonya dessert however I was slightly disappointed because the measly amount of gula Melaka filling in each morsels 🙁
All the above dishes was prepared in this spacious and well-equipped kitchen. According to Eric, he also provide cooking class, feel free to make inquiry to him for those interested.
Verdict: It was indeed a unique experience to dine in at a stranger’s home, please click HERE for more information about Withlocals dining experience.
