Yen Can Cook: Aloe Vera Tong Sui
The recent weather is really unpredictable, it can be scorching in the afternoon follow by thunder storm in the evening. I just recovered from sickness last week and hubby was down with fever yesterday. Without hesitate I dug out my nourishing apple tong sui recipe and prepared it for my family. But this time I add in an extra ingredient which is aloe vera.
Aloe vera is a short-stemmed succulent plant species. The leaves are thick and fleshy. The species is frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine and its extracts are widely used in the cosmetics and alternative medicine industries. Aloe vera is believe to have rejuvenating, healing, or soothing properties which good for skin conditions such as sunburns, cold sores and frostbite.
Aloe vera is a popular houseplant and easy to take care too. It grows well in normal garden soil with good water drainage and hardly any pest problem.
Preparation of aloe vera:-
Step 1: Cut aloe vera into shorter size.
Step 2: Peel the hard green skin off.
Step 3: Cut aloe vere into cubes. Place cubes in a sieve and rinse with running water to remove traces of slimy juice.
Ingredients
Aloe vera cubes
2 medium size apples
A few red dates
2 clumps of snow fungus
Some rock sugars
5 cups of water
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 1: Soak the snow fungus until soft then cut into small pieces.
Step 2: De-skinned and de-seeded the apples and cut into wedges. De-seeded the red dates too as the seed believe to be quite heaty to our body.
Step 3: Put all the ingredients into a pot EXCEPT the aloe vera cubes and rock sugar, add in water bring to boil. Turn to medium heat continue boil for 45 minutes.
Step 4: Add in aloe vera cubes and boil for another 5 minutes. Sweeten the soup with rock sugar according to preference.
Step 5: Serve hot or cold.
Happy Cooking!
