Yen Can Cook ~ Seaweed Fish Cake

A simple yet delicious homemade dish where seasoned fish paste is spread over dried seaweed and pan-fried until golden brown. This recipe is perfect as a quick side dish for dinner, a snack for kids, or even a tasty lunchbox addition.

Ingredients (Serves: 3–4)

300g fish paste (store-bought or homemade from fresh fish fillet)

Note: Can substitute with shrimp paste or mixture of both.

2 discs dried seaweed (refer to photo above)

2 – 3 stalks spring onions, chopped

Cooking oil

Note: Since the store bought fish paste is seasoned, so I didn’t add any seasoning to it. For homemade fish paste, you may season it with soy sauce, pepper and sesame oil.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 1: In a bowl, combine the fish paste and chopped spring onions, mix well until the paste is sticky and smooth.
Step 2: Evenly spread the fish paste mixture (Step 1) over the entire surface of the seaweed.
Use the back of a spoon to flatten it into a thin, even layer.
Step 3: Heat a pan over medium heat with cooking oil, put the seaweed-fish paste disc into the pan, fish paste side down. Pan-fry for 3–4 minutes until golden brown.
Step 4: Flip carefully and cook the seaweed side for another 1–2 minutes until the colour turns darker.
Step 5: Remove from pan, let it cool slightly, then cut into wedges or squares. Serve hot with a dipping sauce like sweet chili or mayonnaise.
