Yen Can Cook ~ Soy Sauce & Spring Onion Bean Curd (Vegetarian)
You can hardly see bean curd dishes on my dining table because my family (included myself) not a fan of this soy product. It is not my favourite food most probably because it’s so mildly flavored that it tastes like nothing. I like food with strong flavour after all. 😁
Commonly known as tofu, bean curd is made from ground, pressed soybeans and has been eaten for over 2,000 years. It comes in a number of different forms that are commonly used in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Southeast Asian cuisine.
For the diversity of my recipes sharing in my blog, I would try out different recipes too just like today’s one. Perhaps this is one of the simplest tofu dishes you will make, level 101!
Ingredients (Serve: 3-4)
1 box firm tofu, slice 0.5inch thick
4-5 stalks spring onions, cut into to 3 inch length
Cooking oil
Sauce
1.5 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons cooking wine
2 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon sugar
A dash of white pepper
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 1: Combine all ingredients of sauce in a bowl, mix well and set aside.
Step 2: Gently pat dry the tofu slices with paper towel.
Step 3: Heat cooking oil in pan, put in the tofu slices (Step 2) and let them sear for 5 minutes on each sides until both sides creates golden crust.
Step 4: Push the tofu to one side of the pan and add the spring onion on the opposite side, followed by sauce mixture (Step 1). Let the tofu and spring onion simmering in the sauce until the sauce has thicken to your preferred consistency.
Step 5: Serve
This bean curd looks tasty and healthy! I am thinking of becoming a fulltime vegetarian when I get older & retired.
TM, are you start learning to become a vegetarian gradually now?
I love beancurd especially of it is fried hee..hee.. Even the steamed ones with savory toppings I enjoy very much. When cooking soup, I love adding egg tofu or soft tofu to it. I have contemplated becoming vegetarian many times but failed. LOL!
PH, I also cannot be a vegetarian, it’s hard to give up meat ~>_<~
I thought bean curd can be really good since it is plain and has that “clean” taste to it. 😀
Tekkaus, too plain for me, LOL
I love beancurd…fried or steamed. I do the steamed version with silken tofu all the time at home. Just make a flavourful topping (with fried shallots, garlic, dried prawns, choy poh, etc…so many possibilities) and a sauce (of soy, garlic/onion oil, oyster sauce, chillies even) and your beancurd will not taste bland. Fried beancurd…even more possibilities! 😉
Kris, thank you for offering me so many way to prepare my tofu, maybe I should start to cook more tofu dishes since it is so affordable and healthy. 🙂
Simple & comforting, good with porridge.
KY, I’m starting to like tofu, since I discovered this dish. 🙂
