Zuan Yuan ~ A Teochew Date
Last week I was invited to sample dishes that featured in Zuan Yuan latest promotion “A Teochew Date” which runs from 1st November to 30th November 2011.
Teochew Cuisine is heavy emphasis on poaching, steaming and braising which is more healthier than most other Chinese cuisines. It also depends much on the freshness and quality of the ingredients for taste and flavor.
We were greeted by this huge collection of wine bottles once we stepped into Zuan Yuan, One World Hotel.
Some of the unique Chinese wine bottles.
Dark colour wooden wall, floral motif carpet & furniture in earth tone, modern with some Chinese influence thrown in here and there.
Duo Combination of Teochew Style Steamed and Deep-Fried ‘Fen Guo’
We started off our meal with the traditional Teochew ‘Fen Guo’ in duo style. The steamed ‘Fen Guo’ had a “sexy” translucent skin where we can peep into it what’s inside 😛 Encasing with diced turnip, carrot, peanut, mushroom, chives & water chestnut, light with a good bite texture with all the ingredients.
As for the fried ‘Fen Guo’, the combination textures of crispy and slightly chewy & soft skin which similar with yam dumpling had created a totally different impact with the previous steamed version although they have same filling. Most of us prefer this, try it & tell me which one you like 🙂
Braised Shark Fin with Crab Claw and Scallop
I love soup especially when it was boiled with so many luxury ingredients like crab claw & scallop (but not sharkfin please). A great tummy and soul warmer but it could be better if the taste can be slightly more robust.
A plate of blanched bean sprouts was served along with the soup, add in to your soup to get a crunchy & refreshing twist.
Deep Fried Teochew ‘Shi Liu Guo’
The money bag look alike fried beancurd sheet filled with minced meat, mushroom & water chestnut. This was mediocre but I could live with it.
Steamed Leather Jacket Fish with Garlic, Ginger and Teochew Sauce
The flaky fish was covered bountifully with minced ginger, garlic, bird eyes chili & Teochew bean sauce. The sauce concoctions definitely packs a nice fiery punch & complemented the fish fillet very well.
Braised Rice Noodle with Assorted Seafood
The slippery rice noodle (hor fun) was fried with good “wok hei” but the gravy was a bit bland for me although it was flavored with dried sole fish. No faults here but just me prefer food with more intense flavor as I saw my companions enjoyed this immensely 😛
Fried Rice with Olive Vegetable
The fried rice was fragrant with pickled olive vegetables (榄菜), egg, chicken, spring onion & broccoli stem & I like the texture of the rice where every grain separated and no lumps detected.
Sweetened Yam Paste
Definitely number one Teochew signature dessert also known as “Or Nee”. Normally lard was added for the traditional version of yam paste but due to health conscious the lard was omitted & oil used was reduced. The sweet syrup with citrus peel balanced out the creaminess of the yam paste, I can finish this big portion without any cloying feeling 🙂
The Teochew Date set menu is priced at RM68++ per person and runs from 1st Nov to 30th Nov, 2011.
