Oliver Gourmet & Oliver Deli @ Tropicana City Mall
The market scene at Klang Valley over the past few years has been transformed with the arrival of high-end supermarkets such as Ben’s Independent Grocer, Village Grocer, Jaya Grocer, Mercato, Jason Food Hall, just to name a few.
Along with the arrival of premium grocer, they revamped the concept of in-store dining, aptly named as ‘Grocerant’. Not offering the usual quick bite or take-away lunch or dinner we have seen at hypermarket, the new age of Grocerant offers premium food such as wine, oyster, pork etc to attract crowds.
The newest kid in town is Oliver Gourmet. Located on ground floor of Tropicana City Mall (same level as Starbucks Kenny Rogers), spanning across 1,114.84sq m and filled with wide range of local and imported grocery items. The brightly lit space with sporting fresh ambiance, appealing décor, wide aisles as well as extensive variety of quality products that are sourced from some of the best producers both local and international, which will definitely give shoppers a new level of shopping experience. Further enhance the shopping experience, shoppers can enjoy the freshly baked pastries and bread at the bakery section while enjoying a cup of coffee at Oliver Cafe.
The aforementioned ‘Grocerant’ which combining Malaysians’ discerning shopping habits with their love of food and adventure, the Olive Deli nestled in the Non-halal section is a dining corner that offers ‘cook-on-demand’ service. Shoppers can purchase a specific range of meats then have it cooked for dine-in or take-away.
Sharing a space with the wine and alcoholic beverage corner that carries 1,500 different wine labels, the dining area at Olive Deli can accommodate approximately 3o diners with usual tables and metal chairs as well as counter bar seating.
Wide variety of fresh meats, processed meat such as ham, sausages, bacon, imported premium ham, ready-to-eat food, pre-packed sauces and assorted of beverages are available here.
Feel lazy to cook at home after your grocery shopping? One may proceed to the cook-on-demand counter, get your choices of meat and let the chef do the cooking for you. You may opt to dine-in or take away the food and enjoy it at home. There is also a small menu of salad, light snack and pasta to complete your meal.
This selection of Spain Artisanal Ham platter immediately piqued my interest as I saw a few ham being proudly displayed at the counter when I stepped into the dining area.
Okay, enough of introduction. Let’s move on to the star of today’s review.
Joselito Iberico Ham! Specially air-flown from Spain and probably the only place you can taste it at Klang Valley. Trust me, once you tasted the heavenly ham, you will be drooling over it for days.
Joselito (Cárnicas Joselito S.A.) is manufacturer of Iberian, acorn-fed pork products from Guijuelo (Salamanca, Spain). It is better known on the market by its commercial names “Joselito” or “Jamón Joselito”. What’s so special about their JOSELITO’s pigs?
Literally Iberian pigs (black-skinned pigs) are happy animals! They live their lives with complete freedom in their natural habitats and make their home in the oak forest pasturelands, a valuable ecosystem halfway between the Mediterranean forests and the country’s grasslands.
Those pigs can roam around and exercise in about 3 hectares of woodland where they can cover up to 10 kilometres a day looking for the acorns and grass that constitute their staple diet. Various anatomical features characterise Joselito’s Happy Pigs, including long, slender limbs, high ribcage, meat with a very high oleic acid content due to their diet and genetic make-up and a tendency for fat to penetrate their musculature.
Joselito hams are taken from the hind limb of the adult pig and they are prepared using appropriate salting and natural curing processes for a minimum period of 36 months, while for some the curing process can last up to 120 months.
5J Jamón ibérico de bellota, manufactured by Cinco Jotas, another old and well-respected brand in Spain. The Iberian pigs are rared and cured by using the similar method as above, a guarantee of excellent and premium quality ham.
Joselito & 5J Jamón Ibérico de Bellota
The ham was meticulously sliced to a nearly see-through perfection, small enough to eat in one bite, and carved at a level angle to get the most consistent and efficient slices from the ham as possible. These acorn-fed Jamón Ibérico are intensely flavourful, with pleasant earthiness and nuttiness and fat that melts right in your mouth. They contain a fat that packed with monounsaturated omega-9, the same as found in avocados or olive oil (good fat). There is subtle nuance between both J5 and Joselito, my vote goes to the latter for its easy-to-the-palate saltiness, and that smoky aftertaste that sits on my upper mouth and tongue. It has such a finesse of meaty essence, simply divine and I was blissfully satiated…
Now you know why does good Jamón Ibérico cost so much. It’s more than the expensive pigs, spacious farmland, or acorn-rich diet. It’s more than the time and investment needed to prepare and cure hams properly, or the laboratory science and quality control behind the scenes.
From the cook-on-demand counter~
Roasted Pork Salad (RM14.90) & Shabu Pork Salad (RM12.90)
For those who wish for a healthier option, there is always a salad! Both salads are tempting enough to cater for healthy diners with its balance of leafy greens and delicious pork tossed in sesame or vinaigrette dressing.
Pork Shoulder Steak
Choose your meats from the counter and let them cook for you! This really sound great right? The best thing is you just need to pay for the meat and no extra cooking fee is charged!
Our Iberico pork shoulder steak was grilled beautifully, tender and succulent. It was wonderfully flavourful with hints of spices, not too overpowering and showcased the original flavour of the highly prized swine.
Pork Neck Steak
Equally tantalizing was this grilled pork neck, well executed with very minimal seasoning, perhaps just a sprinkle of salt and pepper to retained its original meaty flavour. Paired with house made tomato chutney which was really bud tickling, I polished it off like nobody’s business LOL. This dish was so awesome that it’s worth hogging it to oneself.
These premium sausages were hit it out of the park, they were juicy and delicious with each one having its own unique flavours. They had a good firm bite and a lovely smoky aroma. I like how juicy the sausage is and I certainly would have love to have some mashed potato to go with this dish if I cook it at home.
At first glance, it seem like the usual Aglio Olio but it didn’t I tell ya! Although made through the basic ingredients of garlic, herbs and chili, this version is knock-up even further with bacon and the pièce de résistance of this dish – deep fried Joselito lard! Instead of olive oil, Joselito lard oil is used to whip up this pasta, the aroma was superficially striking and elevated the overall flavours a few notches.
Pork Bolognese (RM16.90)
A pretty average version and did not hit us with huge surprise.
Verdict: I like the ambience and wide variety of products and fresh produces offered by Oliver Gourmet which made grocery shopping and enjoyable experience. The cook-on-demand certainly bring convenience to those who doesn’t cook at home but as a working mother like myself, I’m glad that I can take-away the cooked food too whenever the lazy bugs bite 😛
If you feel like splurge on a meal, don’t miss the Joselito or J5 Jamón Ibérico de Bellota, you really can’t get any better than that.
