The ambiance is pretty simply and minimal in décor. The illumination came from the glass panel door which allow abundance of sunlight and the hanging ball shape lighting that created a comfy vibe for dining. There are common wooden tables and chair and semi-partitioned booth seats as well as a private tatami room that can accommodate 10-12 persons.

Our dinner kick started with a few appetizers.

Kamameshi (釜飯) is one of the special item at Umeshu. Literally translates to “kettle rice” , is a traditional Japanese rice dish cooked in an iron pot.

Unagi Kamameshi

The cooking time of 15-20 minutes was worth waiting as once the lid was removed, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking aroma of Teriyaki glazed eel. Hiding underneath was well flavoured rice cooked with stock studded with Aburaage, shimeji mushroom topped with wasabi and shredded seaweed.

Gomoku Kamameshi

Another rendition was full of ocean flavors, loaded with bounteous of salmon chunks, scallops, prawns and Tobiko. Have a good mix of all the ingredients and the rice, every mouthful tasted wonderfully tasty with bursting flavors.

Umeshu’s menu is rather extensive and the sushi and maki rolls contributed a major section and we’ve tried a few of them.

This was special with crisp outer rice layer that gives the salmon roll a nice crunch.

The generous cut of Salmon was lightly torched rendering a pleasant smoky flavor, crowned with dollop of mayonnaise and Salmon roe.

A basket of adeptly fried vegetables and prawn tempura, crispy and no traces of oil served with homemade tempura sauce.

Salmon Kobuto Teriyaki

Slathered with sweet Teriyaki sauce, the Salmon head was quite meaty and I like it with a squeeze of lemon juice for that extra zing.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Yakitori Squid

Grilled with minimal seasoning to retain the natural sweetness of the seafood.

Teppan Gyu Steak

Served sizzling hot on an iron plate, I never expect such a delicious steak dish can be found in a Japanese restaurant!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Cooked in a perfect doneness of medium rare, the steak served with their homemade black pepper garlic sauce was achingly tender. While the main star was spot on, the supporting cast of mashed potato deserves an additional clap too for its extremely buttery flavors.

Ishiyoki Curry Udon

Everyone was attracted to the delightful aroma of the curry that wafted to our table even before the dish was place on it. Thick, creamy and spicy, yes spicy which is much different with the usual sweet Japanese curry won likes from us because the spiciness level really welcomed by Malaysian taste buds.

Ishiyaki Salmon Tobiko

Served in a hot stone bowl, the rice was topped with Salmon fillet, Tobiko, raw egg, spring onions and peppery sauce. Have a good mix of everything and enjoy the absolutely soul and tummy satisfying combo.

Seasonal Pan Fried Salmon Bone

A hidden dish which is not in the menu. Stir fried Salmon bones with assorted vegetables which is spicy, robust and full of flavors!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Bavaria Pomegranate / Bavaria Peach

Interesting alcohol-free Bavaria malt drink imported from Holland with refreshing fruity notes.

CHOYA Umeshu Japanese Plum Wine

My first taste of this Japanese plum wine and immediately fall in love with it. The wine has faint aroma of Ume fruit, well-balanced acidity and sweetness, the easy to the palate character definitely well accepted by ladies.
Verdict: A worth recommending Japanese restaurant if you want something different at that vicinity where most of the eateries served common hawker food. The affordable set lunch certainly a can’t miss too!
