Ye Zi 椰子 @ The Roof, First Avenue
What’s your version of comfort food on a rainy evening? It can be a pot of tummy warmer porridge, a table full of home cook food by your mom or a pipping hot steamboat. *Yay to the last option! As a steamboat addict, hubby and I will never can resist a steamboat meal especially on a rainy evening that triggers our craving even more.
Last month on a chilly rainy evening, we decided to try out Ye Zi located at The Roof which I’ve read from several blogs regarding their steamboat with special coconut-based broths.
About Ye Zi
Ye Zi 椰子, mean ‘COCONUT’ in Mandarin, it is also the first of its kind concept steamboat in the country that uses coconut-based broth hence the name is given. This concept was inspired from a famous Chinese steamboat restaurant in Shenzhen, China. With a philosophy of delivering the freshest dish to the table, the natural flavor of coconut water basically emphasizes to make up and bring up the quality and freshness of the food.
There are 5 signature broths available at Ye Zi; The Original Yezi Broth, Imperial Canton Broth, Aromatic Taiwanese Beef Spice Broth, Fragrant Shao Xing Wine Seafood Broth and Wild Forest Truffle Mushroom Broth which priced between RM 38.00 to RM 78.00.
We were in awe upon entering the restaurant. Being tastefully decorated with oriental themed ornaments such as special designed light fittings, circular arches and Chinese paintings and motifs on the wall.
The dining area is separated into a few section to accommodate different groups of patrons. Furnished with elegant marble tables and wooden chairs as well as booth seats, convey promises of an enjoyable dining experience. There are private rooms available too.
Follow the guidance provided to mix the Yezi special homemade dipping sauce which consisted of superior soy sauce, chili, sand ginger and lime.
I’m a typical Malaysian that love to have my steamboat with chili sauce, this special concoction really hit the high note on spiciness and to be honest it goes a little beyond my spicy threshold 😛
Coconut Blended (RM 13.00+) & Apple Juice (RM 10.00+)
Sam was famished after her afternoon nap before we came here so we got her some light bites.
Beancurd Skin with Chicken Floss (RM 12.00+)
She loves this and almost finished half of the portion!
Chicken Cartilage (RM 8.00)
The chicken cartilage was infused with moreish prawn paste marinade, perfectly fried with crispy outer. We was lucky that day to secure the last plate of chicken cartilage as there are limited servings for this dish and not available everyday.
The Original Yezi Signature Broth (RM 38.00+/ pot ~ refillable)
Broth is the essence of any good steamboat, here at Ye Zi their signature fresh coconut water soup base is boiled together with bamboo pith and water chestnuts to enhance the flavors. The aroma wafted from the boiling pot was unmistakable with a whiff of sweetness.
Organic Chicken (half chicken – RM20.00+ & whole chicken – RM30.00+)
Add in a portion of chicken to jazz up the flavors and further boost up the sweetness of the soup. It was certainly a totally new steamboat experience for us in terms of flavors. We got a lovely hit of sweetness from the delicate coconut water broth and definitely can’t wait to add in the steamboat ingredients.
Assorted of meat balls undoubtedly the key ingredients of every steamboat meal but you can’t find the common processed balls here as Ye Zi prepare their homemade meat balls daily from the kitchen. Using only the freshest and premium quality of ingredients, these balls are scrumptious and pronounced in flavor.
up: Black Pepper Cheese Balls (RM 16.00+) & bottom: Black Truffle Balls (RM 24.00+)
up: Tung Choy Pork Balls (RM 12.00+) & bottom: Mui Choy Pork Balls (RM 12.00+)

up: Chicken with Mushroom Balls (RM 12.00+) & bottom: Cuttlefish Pork Balls (RM 12.00+)
My top pick are Black Pepper Cheese Balls & Fried Lobster Salad Balls with oozing goodness as shown in above photos, as well as Mui Choy Pork Balls for its wonderful combination of flavors.
The Coconut Dumpling (RM12.00+) , Imperial Seafood Dumpling (RM 28.00+), Shaoxing Pork Dumpling (RM 12.00+) and Chives Dumpling (RM 12.00+)
Besides those homemade meat balls, Ye Zi’s signature house made dumplings scream for attention too. The presence of coconut flesh in the coconut dumpling rendering a refreshing note to the palate, a brilliant combination indeed. Others dumplings are equally good with juicy and generous filling, do not attempt to miss them if you’re in Ye Zi.

Prawn paste serve in bamboo, freshness is guaranteed. Patrons can opt for DIY scoop out the prawn paste like yours truly or the attentive staff is ready to assist you.
Fish & Tobiko Paste Noodle (RM 18.00+)
Served playfully in a syringe, you may need help from the waiting staff to press out the paste as the texture of the paste is quite firm. The popping sensation of the flying fish roes was interesting.
Pork Neck Meat (RM 16.00)
Organic vegetables (RM 10.00+) & Mushroom (RM 8.00 -12.00+)
With the promise of providing the finest and freshest ingredients, the thinly sliced meat included the premium Spanish Black Pig, Japan Matsusaka Beef, Premium Lamb Slice, organic vegetables and mushrooms are a must order for more variety for your steamboat enjoyment.
Fresh seafood offerings include a variety of all-time steamboat pairing favourites including fishes, crustaceans and shell fishes are displayed through a gigantic aquarium for patrons to choose.
Imported Taiwanese Bamboo Charcoal Ramen (RM 5.00+)
For staple food lover, there are both local and imported noodles to fill up your tummy.
Over-ordered seem like normal for us when come to steamboat and this time had no exception too especially when the ingredients are so tempting. We wish we have bigger stomach to try ALL the ingredients in their menu. Ok perhaps it’s a good excuse to revisit, with bigger group hopefully~~
Homemade Fragrant Coconut Ice Cream (RM10)
A sweet ending to the satiated dinner, creamy and richly infused coconut ice cream. *burps
Supper promotion which I think is quite a worthy deal.
Verdict: Definitely one-of-its-kind premium steamboat experience for me. The prices might be on the higher side but commensurable with the gorgeous environment, attentive service and high quality food. This might not be a place we really afford to go often but I wouldn’t mind return for a special occasion or when I feel like splurge a little more for a luxurious meal ^__*
